Midfielder born in Perth, Western Australia who was sometimes known as 'Fred' or 'Freddie' and started his career with Perth-based club Sorrento where he progressed through the youth ranks.
In the summer of 2002 Wayne moved to England shortly before his 17th birthday after being signed by Charlton on a three-year scholarship and he went on to score five goals from 23 outings for the Addicks' Under-17's side during the 2002/03 season. Wayne also made a few appearances for the Under-18 and Under-19 teams.
During the 2003/04 campaign he scored three times in 23 games for Charlton's senior Academy side as well as featuring four times in the reserves.
Wayne continued to play for the Under-19's during 2004/05 and once again made a few reserve team appearances but towards the end of the season he was told that he'd be released by Charlton when the campaign finished.
In a bid to find a new club for 2005/06 Wayne had a trial at Yeovil in March 2005 and played for their reserves in a 4-3 win over Swindon before being loaned to Conference South outfit Bishop's Stortford at the end of March 2005.
Having been released by Charlton Wayne tried his luck in Iceland in May 2005 and played twice for Fylkismenn during a trial spell with the club before returning to England.
Later in the summer of 2005 he had trials at Rotherham and then Bristol Rovers and shortly after linking up with Rovers Wayne told the club's official website "Hopefully training here will go well. It's always been my ambition to play in England. I was made promises at Charlton, but it didn't happen, so I hope things work out differently here."
At the end of July 2005 Wayne left Bristol Rovers and in August 2005 he featured in three friendlies for Dagenham & Redbridge but didn't get a deal there.
In September 2005 Wayne played for Barnet's reserves as they beat Colchester 3-1 and later in the month he joined Conference club Gravesend & Northfleet.
After a brief spell with Gravesend Wayne dropped out of football for around a year as his father was seriously ill.
He resurfaced at Stevenage in October 2006 and spent some time in their reserve side before leaving the club towards the end of 2006.
In February 2007 Wayne played in two reserve games for Aldershot and then towards the end of March 2007 he signed for Conference South outfit Thurrock where he ended the 2006/07 season.
Wayne joined Basingstoke for the start of the 2007/08 campaign but didn't feature in their first team before linking up with Bromley in November 2007.
He went on to score once from 21 appearances (ten as sub) in all competitions for the Conference South club and in March 2008 Wayne left Bromley and moved on to Carshalton.
He made one substitute appearance for the Robins in the Isthmian League Premier Division before the end of the 2007/08 season.
In the summer of 2008 Wayne signed a two-year contract with Margate after impressing in his first two friendly outings and on 10.8.08 he scored in the club's final pre-season game - a 3-1 win over Cray at Hartsdown Park.
Wayne made his competitive debut in a 2-1 defeat at Carshalton in the Isthmian League Premier Division on 16.8.08 - the opening day of the 2008/09 campaign - and thus became the third Australian to play for Margate, following in the footsteps of 1950's goalkeeper Peter Peters and 1970's midfielder Geoff Finch. Wayne set up Margate's goal with a corner that was headed in by Jack Parkinson and it was the first of many assists which were often the result of his dead ball prowess. On 19.8.08 Wayne scored with a deflected shot from 25 yards on his home debut as Margate drew 2-2 with Hendon and he also set up a goal for Louis Smith by picking the centre-back out with a free-kick.
In its report on a 4-0 defeat against Canvey Island at Hartsdown Park on 23.8.08 the Thanet Times said Wayne "once again looked the biggest threat" and on 11.11.08 he scored his second goal in a 2-1 win at Boreham Wood. The Isle of Thanet Gazette said it was a "wonder strike" as Wayne "arrowed home an absolute beauty from 30 yards into the top corner" and earlier his free-kick had set up Margate's opening goal for Luke Wheatley.
Later in November 2008 Wayne scored back-to-back goals by finding the net in a 2-1 win at Hendon on 22.11.08 and then curling home a 25 yard effort in a 2-1 defeat against Maidstone in a Kent Senior Cup tie at Sittingbourne on 25.11.08 to make it three goals from four games. He took his season's tally to five with a strike in a 2-2 draw with visitors Carshalton on 6.12.08 and in its report on a 2-0 home defeat against Dover on 3.1.09 the Thanet Times said Wayne "wouldn't look out of place in Dover's team" - at the time they were 20 points clear at the top of the Premier Division.
After playing in midfield in each of Margate's first 31 matches Wayne sat out a 1-0 defeat at Tonbridge on 31.1.09 due to serving a ban for accumulated yellow cards but after that he only missed one more game before the end of the campaign. He marked his return to the side with a goal in a 2-0 win over Tooting & Mitcham at Hartsdown Park on 7.2.09 and Wayne's first-time volley from the edge of the penalty area was described as being "yet another cracker" by the Thanet Times. The paper then singled him out for praise in its report on a 3-1 home win over Boreham Wood on 21.2.09 and said Wayne had "excelled" throughout the season whilst adding "he always could play but now he's also the man putting his foot in to make tackles".
On 3.3.09 Wayne smashed home a direct free-kick in a 4-0 win at Canvey Island and on 28.3.09 he took his goal tally to eight with a penalty in a 3-1 win over visitors Billericay. Wayne was then stretchered off with an ankle problem in a 3-2 defeat at Harrow on 4.4.09 and missed the next match due to the injury. He ended the season having scored eight times in 44 outings as Margate finished in the relegation zone of the Isthmian League Premier Division and won the 'Supporters' Player of the Year' award.
A few days before the start of the 2009/10 campaign Margate manager Terry Yorath spoke to the Isle of Thanet Gazette about Wayne and said "Wayne's struggled for fitness and form in pre-season but I know I can get him back to where he was. The problem is having somebody to play with him."
Wayne made his first appearance of the new season on 28.7.09 as Margate beat Ramsgate 1-0 at Hartsdown Park in the first leg of a tie played for the Isle of Thanet Gazette Cup and he was a fixture in midfield after that, featuring in each of Margate's first 33 matches of 2009/10.
Wayne had a shaky start to the campaign and in its report on a 4-0 home defeat against Dartford in the Isthmian League Premier Division on 18.8.09 the Isle of Thanet Gazette said of him "He pings passes about for fun at his best. On Tuesday he looked nervous, couldn't wait to get rid of the ball and found a team-mate probably twice all night. That can only be confidence, for whatever reason, because everyone knows the talent he has".
On 24.8.09 Wayne scored his first goal of the season with a long-range effort in a 3-0 win at Aveley and on 15.9.09 he found the net in a 3-2 defeat at Sutton in the FA Cup when his 35-yard free-kick from the left flank eluded everybody and dropped into the net. But despite his goals Wayne wasn't at his best and in its report on a 3-1 defeat against visitors Horsham on 19.9.09 the Thanet Times described him as "an out-of-form central midfielder trying to play on the right".
Wayne started to find some form towards the end of 2009 and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said he was "the best player on the park" in a 1-0 win at VCD in the Isthmian League Cup on 10.11.09. The paper added "what a bonus it would be if (new boss Mark) Butler can get him playing again after a difficult start to the season".
On 23.1.10 Wayne got his third goal of the campaign when he bent a free-kick into the bottom corner of the net in a 3-3 draw with Horsham at Horsham YMCA and on 13.2.10 a 1-0 defeat at AFC Hornchurch marked the start of a three match spell where Wayne acted as Margate's joint caretaker player-manager alongside John Keister. Unfortunately for Wayne in the second game of his brief managerial reign - a 3-1 home defeat against Billericay on 16.2.10 - he suffered a knee injury and as a result he missed the last 17 matches of the season. Margate finished the campaign in the Premier Division drop zone once more but again avoided relegation and Wayne had scored three times in 34 appearances (one as sub) before being injured.
In May 2010 Carshalton tried to sign Wayne and their manager at the time was Mark Butler who'd had a brief spell in charge of Margate a few months earlier. The club reported Butler to the Isthmian League for making an illegal approach and Margate boss Iain O'Connell told the Isle of Thanet Gazette "Mark Butler approached Wayne and offered him a deal but unfortunately for Mark he's on contract and it's an illegal approach which we will report to the league. We had a year's option on his contract and he's staying with us. He's been injured and hasn't played for me yet but I'm told he's a good player and a great dead-ball specialist, which is something we definitely lacked. We need someone who can drill or whip the ball into the box, so having Wayne fit might be one of my problems solved."
On the eve of the 2010/11 season Iain O'Connell spoke about Wayne to the Isle of Thanet Gazette and said "Skilful midfielder who could be an excellent player for us, if only he'd believe in himself more."
Wayne made his first appearance of the new Isthmian League Premier Division campaign on 21.8.10 when he came on as a half-time substitute for his fellow Australian James Sherman in a game against Canvey Island at Hartsdown Park and the Thanet Times said he was "heavily involved" as Margate drew 2-2. Wayne then started for the first time in a 2-1 defeat at Lowestoft on 28.8.10 and on 30.8.10 he scored a late equaliser to earn Margate a 1-1 draw with visitors Maidstone. The Isle of Thanet Gazette said it was a "wonder-goal" as Wayne picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and "hit an absolute beauty on his left foot" which curled into the top corner. He then featured in the next 13 matches but was used as a substitute in six of them.
On 21.9.10 Wayne came on just six minutes into a game at Folkestone and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said he "played a key role" by setting up both goals in a 2-1 win. He then curled home a brilliant free-kick from 25 yards in an FA Cup replay at Kingstonian on 27.9.10 which Margate lost on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 after extra time.
After a substitute appearance in a 0-0 draw at Billericay on 23.10.10 Wayne missed three games altogether before wearing the number seven shirt in a 1-0 home defeat against Bury on 6.11.10 and he then enjoyed an extended run of starts.
He got his third and fourth goals of the season in a dramatic 3-2 win over Sutton at Hartsdown Park on 13.11.10 as Margate came back from 2-1 down and the Thanet Times match report was headlined "Wayne's worldie". That was a reference to what the paper called his "absolute screamer" from 30 yards that won the match and Wayne's first strike had come from a direct free-kick which the Times described as "an absolute cracker into the far top corner". The paper said they were "a couple of stunning goals" but Wayne himself said "I should be playing like that every week so I'm not going to get too excited about it because that should be the standard for me."
After over two months as a fixture in midfield Wayne missed five games due to injury following a 2-0 home win over Hastings on 22.1.11 and then returned as a substitute in a 1-1 draw with Horsham at Horsham YMCA on 12.2.11. After one more outing from the bench he started in a 2-1 win over visitors Carshalton on 12.3.11 and then only missed one match before the end of the campaign.
On 19.3.11 Wayne acted as joint caretaker manager for a game against Hendon at Wembley FC, working alongside fellow players Craig Cloke and James Pinnock following Iain O'Connell's departure, and he scored with a penalty in a 3-2 win. It was the trio's only match in charge.
In his next outing Wayne converted another spot-kick in a 2-1 home defeat against Concord Rangers on 22.3.11 and then scored for the third game in a row when his corner went straight in as Margate drew 2-2 with AFC Hornchurch at Hartsdown Park on 26.3.11. He then bagged a brace in a 3-3 home draw with Kingstonian on 30.4.11 and unusually both Wayne's goals were headers. He finished the season having scored nine times (two penalties) from 40 appearances (nine as sub).
At the start of June 2011 Wayne was appointed as head of Margate's 'Football In The Community' programme and until then he'd had similar role working for his old club Charlton in the Canterbury area.
A few days before the start of the 2011/12 campaign manager Chris Kinnear spoke to the Isle of Thanet Gazette about him and said "Wayne's a decent all-round player who will score goals from midfield. Hopefully he'll notch one or two from his set-pieces."
Wayne was also interviewed by the paper and said "In all the time I've been at the club, this is the strongest squad we've had. It's the most excited I've ever been before the start of the season. We're all ambitious to get back to the Conference and in Chris (Kinnear) we have a manager with a proven track record. Promotion would be the ultimate aim for us, either directly or through the play-offs. There's no reason we can't achieve that. We all believe it's possible."
Wayne made his first appearance of the new campaign as a substitute in a 1-1 draw at Wealdstone in the Isthmian League Premier Division on 20.8.11 and after featuring once more from the bench he started in midfield as Margate lost 4-1 to Lowestoft at Hartsdown Park on 27.8.11. He was back on the bench again as Margate travelled to Hastings on 29.8.11 and after coming on in a 2-2 draw Wayne missed the next five games with a calf injury.
He returned to action as a substitute in a 2-0 home defeat against AFC Hornchurch on 27.9.11 and Wayne then made one more sub appearance in the next three matches before starting for only the second time as Margate took on Cray in a Kent Senior Cup tie at Hartsdown Park on 11.10.11. Unfortunately he picked up a bad knee injury just ten minutes into the game and had to go off. Margate went on to win 2-1.
As Wayne recuperated Chris Kinnear spoke to the Isle of Thanet Gazette about him at the end of October 2011 and said "He was going to go out on loan to get some games, then he picked up his knee injury. He's still limping about at the moment so the first thing he needs to do is get his knee right. I like Wayne. I saw him playing for Bromley when I was scouting and I thought then 'I'd like to have him in my side'. He's a decent player and a nice lad but if you're not playing it makes sense to go out on loan and keep fit."
By mid-December 2011 Wayne was back in full training but he didn't feature in the Margate side again until 21.1.12 when he came on as a late substitute in a 5-1 home win over Lewes. He also featured as a sub in a 4-3 defeat against visitors Charlton in the Kent Senior Cup on 24.1.12 but Wayne then sat out the next three matches.
On 18.2.12 he scored for the reserves as they lost 4-3 to Chatham at Hartsdown Park and two days later Wayne came on as a sub as the first team lost 2-1 at Kingstonian. He didn't feature in Margate's senior side again until 13.3.12 when he wore the number eight shirt in a 1-0 home win over Harrow and that was Wayne's first start for over five months. The Isle of Thanet Gazette said "generally, it was quiet return for a man who's spent much of the season out injured and the man-of-the-match award from the sponsors was more than a little generous".
Wayne kept his place in midfield for Margate's next game - a 2-1 defeat at Lowestoft on 24.3.12 - and then featured as a substitute in a 3-0 defeat at AFC Hornchurch on 27.3.12 but that was his last outing in the first team. Wayne spent the rest of the season in the reserves and after making a total of 13 senior appearances (nine as sub) without scoring during 2011/12 he left the club in May 2012 and joined Faversham.
Despite his transfer Wayne continued in his role as head of Margate's 'Football In The Community' programme and he was a regular in Faversham's side throughout the 2012/13 campaign as they reached the Isthmian League Division 1 South play-offs before losing to Maidstone in the Final. In all Wayne made 32 league appearances (three as sub) and scored seven times. He stayed with Faversham for the 2013/14 season too and still continued to work for Margate.
