Midfielder born in Havering, Essex who attended Shenfield High School and helped them to win the English Schools FA Under-16 Individual Schools Cup during the 2003/04 season. Tom was chosen as 'man of the match' in the final.
He was already on Division 3 (later League Two) club Leyton Orient's books by then having made his debut for the O's Under-17's team as a substitute in a game against Southend in January 2003. Tom also featured in Orient's Under-19's side before the end of the 2002/03 campaign.
He was a regular in the O's junior sides during 2003/04 and during the 2004/05 season Tom made 29 appearances (six as sub) and scored once for Orient's youth team as they won the Football League Youth Alliance South-East Conference.
During the first half of the 2005/06 campaign Tom made six appearances (two as sub) for the O's reserves without scoring and he also played 16 times for the youth team (once as sub), scoring twice.
In January 2006 he had a trial with Conference club Aldershot and Tom played for the Shots reserves before briefly going back to Brisbane Road. By then he knew that he was going to be released by Orient at the end of the 2005/06 season.
In February 2006 he joined Margate on loan aged 18 and after an ankle injury initially delayed his debut Tom made his first appearance as a substitute in a 4-0 win over Wealdstone at Northwood on 25.2.06. He became only the second player with a surname starting with the letter Z to play for Margate and coincidentally Wealdstone's captain was Chris Zoricich who'd previously become the first Margate player with a Z surname.
Tom didn't feature in the next two Isthmian League Premier Division matches but on 14.3.06 he impressed as Margate drew 3-3 in a friendly at Chatham. Manager Chris Kinnear told the Isle of Thanet Gazette that he was interested in keeping Tom and said "He's going to be leaving the Orient, we need to talk to him about it. He looks a decent player. He's another young lad - 18 or 19 - but as long as we've got the experienced players around it's a nice balance."
Tom made his next appearance as a substitute in a 4-2 defeat against Walton & Hersham at Hartsdown Park on 18.3.06 and on 21.3.06 he played from the start in a Kent Senior Cup tie at Gravesend & Northfleet. Margate lost 1-0 and Tom didn't feature again before going back to Orient.
Having left the O's he joined Essex Senior League club Basildon in November 2006 and Tom spent a few months there before leaving the club in February 2007. At that time he was working a city trader in London.
Tom later linked up with Essex Olympian League Division 1 outfit Harold Wood and during the 2008/09 season one of his team-mates there was legendary non-league goalscorer Steve Portway. Tom was still turning out for Harold Wood during the 2011/12 campaign.
