Midfielder born in Finsbury, London who was evacuated to Penzance in Cornwall aged five and later started his football career with Penzance before being signed by Plymouth in July 1959.
Terry made eight first team appearances there during 1959/60 but then dropped into non-league football and joined Sittingbourne.
He returned to the Football League in July 1962 when he was signed by Torquay but only played twice for the senior side before joining Margate for a fee of £400 in February 1963 - a club record at the time. Corby had also been after Terry's services.
Margate manager Almer Hall told the local press "We have made a jolly good capture after five weeks' negotiation. We have the supporters' club to thank for providing the bulk of the money and now we hope local fans will rally round and show practical appreciation of a progressive committee, who have scraped the bottom of our financial barrel to find the transfer fee. Terry was one of the best inside-forwards in the Southern League last season. Several clubs were after him but he elected to come to Margate because he likes the team style and the club's facilities. He is single and will live in Margate."
Terry made his debut for Margate in 2-2 draw at Burton on 2.3.63 and made a favourable impression with his deft ball control and passing ability. Terry was described as an "arch schemer" and a player of "great potential" by the local press and he went on to make a total of 31 appearances during the remainder of the 1962/63 season as Margate won the Southern League Division One title, scoring nine times in the process. On 7.5.63 he played as Margate won 2-0 at Maidstone in the 1st Leg of the Kent Floodlight Cup Final and Terry also featured in the 2nd Leg at Hartsdown Park on 13.5.63 which Margate won 3-0 to claim the trophy. On 1.6.63 he was in the team that beat visitors Bexleyheath & Welling 1-0 in the Kent Senior Shield Final.
During the 1963/64 season Terry made a further 45 appearances, scoring six times. His goals included a 25 yard drive in a 3-3 draw at Hereford on 2.11.63. On 16.11.63 he played as Margate drew 2-2 at Brentford in the FA Cup 1st Round and then on 20.11.63 Terry featured in the replay at Hartsdown Park that the Bees won 2-0.
On 18.1.64 he scored with a brilliant solo effort in a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Chelmsford and Terry beat three defenders before firing home. He gained praise for his hard work during the season but in his weekly Thanet Times column former Margate captain Davie Laing pointed out what he saw as a problem with Terry's style of play. Davie said that Terry had "an infuriating habit of running all over the place with the ball, instead of making the ball do the work".
Terry struggled to gain a regular place at the start of the 1964/65 season and in November 1964 he was sold to Canterbury. He'd made just nine appearances for Margate during the first three months of the campaign.
Terry went on to make 70 Southern League appearances for Canterbury during the 1964/65 and 1965/66 seasons. He scored 27 goals in those matches and Terry's tally included four goals in a 10-0 win over Deal on 30.1.65 - City's all-time record victory. He left Canterbury in the summer of 1966 and returned home to Cornwall.
Terry then spent two seasons as a player with his old club Penzance before having a spell as the club's manager.
In 2012 Terry was living in Newlyn near Penzance.
