Folkestone-born defender who began his senior career with Folkestone Invicta at a time when they played in the Kent Amateur League.

Stuart later dropped into local football in the Folkestone area and was playing for a team called Nailbox when Folkestone FC (as opposed to Folkestone Invicta) signed him in March 1989.

He made his home debut in a 1-1 draw with Thanet United on 25.3.89 and stayed at Folkestone until the club went out of business in January 1991.

Stuart joined Margate after Folkestone's collapse and went on to make 11 reserve team appearances without scoring before the end of the 1990/91 campaign.

At the start of the 1991/92 season Stuart broke into Margate's first team, making his debut as a substitute in a 4-0 defeat at Hastings on 20.8.91. On 24.8.91 he made his full debut at centre-back in a 2-1 defeat at Baldock and Stuart then became a fixture in the heart of Margate's defence, usually partnering the experienced Mark Weatherly. The Isle of Thanet Gazette said Stuart was "outstanding" in a 0-0 draw with Dunstable at Hartsdown Park on 9.11.91 whilst the Thanet Times reported he was "in typically sound form" in a 0-0 home draw with Havant on 28.12.91. On 1.1.92 Stuart turned in what the Gazette called a "commanding" performance in a 1-0 win at Hythe and on 29.2.92 he scored his first goal for the club in a 5-0 thrashing of Erith & Belvedere at Hartsdown. He continued his good form as the season drew to a close and the Times said "he gave nothing away in the middle" in a 1-0 win at Newport IOW on 28.3.92. Stuart ended 1991/92 having made 48 appearances (one as sub), scoring once.

He struggled to gain a first team place during the opening weeks of the 1992/93 campaign and Stuart didn't appear until the sixth game of the season when he came on as a substitute in a 0-0 home draw with Corinthian in an FA Cup tie on 12.9.92. He then had a run in the side at right-back and scored with a low shot from well outside the penalty area as Margate beat Corinthian 4-0 in the replay on 21.9.92. After another spell on the sidelines Stuart broke back into the side in October 1992 and played five consecutive games in his favoured centre-back position in the absence of Billy Plews and Mark Weatherly who'd become Margate's first-choice centre-backs. When the experienced pair returned Stuart again found first team opportunities hard to come by and when he lined up for a home game against Bury on 19.12.92 it'd been eight matches since his last start. Unfortunately for Stuart he was sent off for a 'professional' foul before the end of the first half and after he'd played as a makeshift striker in a 5-1 defeat at Canterbury on 26.12.92 he had to serve a three match ban. After completing his suspension Stuart started featuring more regularly, although often as a substitute, and after playing at right-back in a 3-1 win at Burnham on 16.1.93 he appeared in 14 of Margate's last 18 games of the campaign. He usually wore the number two shirt but also played at left-back and in midfield. On 1.5.93 Stuart played his last game for Margate in a 1-1 draw at Dunstable and left the club at the end of the season having scored twice in 33 first team appearances (11 as sub). He also played 12 games for the reserves in the Kent Midweek League.

He joined Canterbury for the 1993/94 campaign and in October 1993 took over in goal when former Margate keeper Joe Radford went off injured during a 3-2 home defeat against Fisher. Stuart made over 30 appearances for City before moving to Whitstable in the summer of 1994.

He went on to make 65 appearances for Whitstable before leaving the club to rejoin his first club Folkestone Invicta in February 1996.

At the end of the 1996/97 season Stuart dropped into Kent County League football and had spells with Snowdown, St.Margaret's and Betteshanger before going back to Whitstable for the 1999/00 campaign.

In the summer of 2000 he joined Dover where he played exclusively for the reserves during 2000/01 and Stuart then joined Sittingbourne for the 2001/02 campaign, again only featuring in the reserves.

He later dropped into Sunday football and in 2007 Stuart was playing for a pub side in Dover aged 40.
