Burly centre-forward born in Tilbury, Essex who had spells on the books of Arsenal and then West Ham as a youth.

Steve later played for Purfleet and in the summer of 1991 he moved on to Tilbury where he spent the 1991/92 season.

He then had a stint with Aveley before his travels in Essex took him to East Thurrock and later Concord Rangers of the Essex Senior League.

Steve left Concord to join Isthmian League Premier Division outfit Enfield during the 1995/96 campaign and he stayed there until September 1997 when Conference club Woking paid £35,000 for his services.

Steve scored on his debut as Woking beat visitors Dover 4-0 on 30.9.97 and on 10.1.98 he was in the side that lost 1-0 to visitors Margate in the FA Trophy.

As his Woking career progressed Steve had spells when he played as a centre-back and by 1999/00 he was Woking's captain. During 2000/01 he was selected for the England Semi-Professional side and made his debut in a match against Wales. In November 2001 Steve played for an FA X1 against a Southern League side in a representative game at Crawley and he'd made around 200 appearances for Woking and scored in the region of 50 goals when he joined Dagenham & Redbridge for a nominal fee in February 2002.

Steve was part of the Daggers side that reached the 4th Round of the FA Cup during 2002/03 where they lost to Norwich and on 8.3.03 he scored after coming on as a substitute in a Conference match against visitors Margate. The Daggers won 3-0 and Steve ended up with 16 league goals for the season.

In June 2003 he was sold to Hornchurch for £10,000 and Steve scored five goals from 20 Isthmian League Premier Division outings for the Urchins during 2003/04 as well as finding the net three times in cup ties.

He joined Conference South outfit Grays for the 2004/05 campaign and on 25.3.05 he came on as a late substitute as they beat Margate 5-0 at Ashford. Manager Chris Kinnear told the Thanet Times "Steve West came on as a sub for them, and he's probably on more money than five of our players put together."

Steve started 2005/06 with East Thurrock - his second spell there - and scored nine goals from 21 Isthmian League Premier Division outings (one as sub) for the Rocks. His tally included one in a 3-1 home win over Margate on 3.12.05.

In January 2006 Steve moved on to Fisher and he scored twice from 14 Premier Division appearances (four as sub) during the remainder of the season.

In the summer of 2006 he signed for Leyton and Steve scored four goals for the Premier Division outfit during the first few weeks of the 2006/07 campaign before leaving the club in September 2006 and dropping out of senior football for the rest of the season.

He resumed his career with a third stint at East Thurrock during 2007/08 and Steve became club captain. He scored in his first outing as the Rocks drew 2-2 at Boreham Wood and Steve went on to make 32 Premier Division appearances (one as sub) during the campaign. He scored 12 league goals and another two in cup ties.

He became player assistant-manager at Sutton for 2008/09 and Steve scored five goals from 38 outings (16 as sub) for the Premier Division club during the season.

In August 2009 he signed for Margate on a non-contract basis aged 36 and made his debut in a 2-1 home win over Boreham Wood in the Isthmian League Premier Division on 22.8.09. The Thanet Times described Steve as a "veteran" and he had to go off injured at half time. After missing two games with a back problem he returned to action in a 1-0 defeat against Cray at Hartsdown Park on 31.8.09 and the Isle of Thanet Gazette wrote "he looks a victim of Blues' 3-5-2 system. The big man was more or less surplus to requirements because I don't reckon Margate put a cross into Cray's box all day. He got a bit of stick but he's been a good player down the years and if Blues had wingers who put the ball on his head, he'd still do a job."

On 5.9.09 Steve scored with a header in the aftermath of a long Aaron Lacy throw-in as Margate drew 2-2 at Ashford (Middlesex) and the Thanet Times said he "looked dangerous in the air". The Isle of Thanet Gazette then said Steve "gave the Hendon defence a going-over" in a 2-1 win over them at Wembley FC on 22.9.09 and added "all that was missing was a goal but he had his chances".

Steve made his final appearance in a 0-0 draw with visitors AFC Hornchurch on 26.9.09 and he bore the brunt of the Hartsdown Park crowd's frustrations. It was his fifth game without scoring and a few days later Steve was released with Margate director Keith Piper telling the Thanet Times "He isn't what we're looking for." Steve had scored once from eight outings before his departure and shortly afterwards caretaker manager Neville Southall told the Isle of Thanet Gazette "I was really disappointed when I heard Westy booed last week. Whatever people's opinion, he tried as hard as anyone and was great in the dressing room."

After leaving Margate Steve went back to East Thurrock as player-coach and scored in the first game of his fourth spell with the club as they beat visitors Wingate & Finchley 3-0 in the Isthmian League Division 1 North on 10.10.09. He scored six times in 12 league outings before leaving East Thurrock at the end of 2009 and retiring.
