6' 1" tall striker born in Peckham who was part of Millwall's School of Excellence between the ages of ten and 14 before spending a year at Tottenham.
Steve then had a spell on Charlton's books as a youth and during the 1993/94 season he combined outings for the Addicks' junior sides with appearances for Dulwich's youth team.
Steve made his first team debut for Dulwich in the 1994/95 campaign and also played for Charlton's reserves during the season. In addition he made a one-off appearance for Watford's reserves in the Football Combination.
A serious knee injury hampered Steve's progress over the next couple of years but having regained full fitness he moved from Dulwich to Fisher early in the 1997/98 campaign.
He scored 27 goals for Fisher during 1997/98 and in October 1998 Leyton Orient signed him for a fee of £3,000. He'd been working as a printer up to that point. The move came about after Steve was one of 830 strikers aged between 18 and 22 who applied to the club as part of a 'Search for a Star' competition run in conjunction with The Sun newspaper.
Steve made his first team debut for the O's as a substitute in a 2-2 draw at Southend on 17.10.98 and future Margate player Adrian Clarke scored one of Southend's goals that day. On 21.11.98 Steve scored his first goal in a 2-1 win over Brentford at Brisbane Road and he went on to score six times in 30 senior appearances before the end of the 1998/99 season.
Although Steve was a regular in Orient's matchday squad at the start of the 1999/00 campaign he struggled for goals and had only found the net once when he was loaned to Conference club Welling at the end of November 1999.
On 4.12.99 Steve scored on his debut for the Wings as they beat Scarborough 2-1 at Park View Road and his strike partner that day was future Margate player Leon Braithwaite. Steve also scored in a 2-1 defeat at Telford on 11.12.99 before returning to Brisbane Road.
He continued to feature regularly for the O's during the remainder of 1999/00 and scored six goals before the end of the season.
Steve then scored ten goals for Orient during the 2000/01 campaign and he was also sent off twice. Early in 2001 The Sun published a story linking him with Jordan which included a photo of Steve and the model together in a nightclub.
The 2001/02 season was probably Steve's best at Brisbane Road as he scored 12 goals including doubles in a 4-2 home defeat against Shrewsbury on 13.10.01 and a 5-0 home win over Lincoln on 22.12.01.
At the start of the 2002/03 campaign Steve struggled to win a regular place in the Orient side and in September 2002 he was loaned to Margate. Manager Chris Kinnear told the Thanet Times "He is tall and two-footed as well as being calm in front of goal."
Steve made his debut in a Conference game at Nuneaton on 14.9.02 and headed home a Paul Lamb cross to open the scoring. Margate went on to lose 3-2 but the Thanet Times said Steve "generally impressed, showing good touches and generally putting in plenty of work". He'd played alongside his former Welling colleague Leon Braithwaite. In his next outing on 17.9.02 Steve scored twice (once from the penalty spot) in a 5-1 win at Woking whilst Braithwaite got a hat-trick and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said he showed "guile". A few days later Margate's assistant manager Kevin Raine told the Gazette "Stevie Watts has been great for us".
He was on target once more in his next appearance on 21.9.02 - scoring in a 2-1 win over Doncaster at Margate's adopted home in Dover - and the Thanet Times said Steve was "inspirational again". Its match report was headlined "Watts Electric Again" and the paper said his loan signing was "inspired" whilst noting "his work-rate and skill left full-time Doncaster floundering". Chris Kinnear told the Thanet Times "I've know Steve personally for a lot of years and when there was an opportunity to sign him, I knew he'd be playing flat out for us."
After scoring four times in his first three outings Steve then endured a barren run of four games without a goal up to and including a 4-1 defeat at Farnborough on 8.10.02. Despite his goalless spell Chris Kinnear told the KM Extra newspaper "I'd like to keep Steve because we've definitely made progress since he's been here." but Steve then returned to Orient having scored four goals in seven appearances for Margate.
After returning to Brisbane Road Steve featured in six first team games for Orient in the next few weeks without scoring and then on 16.11.02 he came on as a substitute as the O's drew 1-1 at home to Margate in the 1st Round Proper of the FA Cup. Curiously that turned out to be his final appearance for the O's. It was Steve's 160th (69 as sub) and he'd scored a total of 35 goals for Orient.
In December 2002 he was loaned to Lincoln and Steve scored once in five outings for the Imps before going back to Orient in January 2003.
At the start of February 2003 he was loaned out again, this time to Conference club Dagenham & Redbridge. Steve scored twice in six appearances for the Daggers and the last outing of his spell with the club came in a 3-0 home win over Margate on 8.3.03. Steve started the match before being replaced by future Margate striker Steve West in the second half.
Steve was released by Orient towards the end of March 2003 and joined their fellow Division 3 (later League Two) club Shrewsbury. He made seven appearances (four as sub) without scoring as they were relegated to the Conference.
Steve stayed with the club for the start of the 2003/04 campaign and on 9.8.03 he scored in Shrewsbury's first Conference game - a 1-1 draw against Margate at Gay Meadow. In October 2003 he was released after failing to score again in a total of nine appearances and before the month was out Steve signed for Dagenham & Redbridge who were also in the Conference at the time.
He scored three goals in 13 outings for the Daggers but in January 2004 Steve was released having asked for his contract to be terminated as he had the opportunity to play in Singapore.
His move to Singapore subsequently fell through and in February 2004 Steve signed for Isthmian League Premier Division club St.Albans. Their squad at the time also included former Margate defender Chris Zoricich. Steve made his debut in a 2-0 home defeat against Billericay on 7.2.04 and he then scored twice in his second game - a 4-2 win at Braintree on 14.2.04. He went on to make a total of 21 appearances for St.Albans and scored nine goals in all before leaving the club at the end of the 2003/04 season.
In the summer of 2004 Steve told the Non-League Paper that he was hoping to get back into the Football League but he ended up rejoining Fisher of the Southern League Eastern Division in June 2004, signing a full-time contract with them. He got two goals in his first outing for the club - a 5-2 win at Maldon on 14.8.04 - and went on to score a remarkable 48 goals during 2004/05 as Fisher won the title. His strike partner was former Margate star Leon Braithwaite.
The 2005/06 season was another great one for Steve as his 31 goals, including a header in a 1-1 draw at Margate on 6.9.05, helped Fisher gain promotion from the Isthmian League Premier Division to the Conference South via the play-offs - a second successive promotion. He was chosen as the Non-League Paper's 'Player of the Year' for the Isthmian League.
In the summer of 2006 Steve was injured when he fell off a moped whilst on holiday in Ayia Napa and missed Fisher's pre-season training. He then struggled to gain a place in the side at the start of 2006/07 but told the Non-League Paper "I missed 13 games last season and still got 37 goals so I'll be looking to get that many again."
At the start of December 2006 Steve left Fisher by mutual consent as he felt he could no longer commit to full-time football due to his business interests. The club's new manager Sami Muduroglu said "Steve has been a fantastic servant to this football club. Everyone at the club is extremely sorry to see him go." He'd scored a remarkable 95 goals in his second spell with Fisher.
Within days Steve looked set to join Conference South club Eastleigh after they'd put in a seven day approach before he left Fisher but he turned down an 18 month contract with the Hampshire outfit and signed for Isthmian League Premier Division Bromley instead. Margate had also spoken to him about a possible return to Hartsdown Park.
Bromley's manager Mark Goldberg said "Steve is a great signing for us who has a proven track record not only at Ryman level but in the leagues above as well." Steve told Bromley's website "Several Conference clubs came in for me but the travelling would have been too much. I was offered an unbelievable package (at Eastleigh) but I turned it down because I need to concentrate on my business. Coming here is not about money." Part of Steve's deal with Bromley was that Mark Goldberg would help him to develop his business.
Steve made his debut for Bromley in a 4-2 home win over Walton & Hersham on 9.12.06 and scored the fourth from the penalty spot. It turned out to be his only goal for the club and in January 2007 he was released by mutual consent having only made six appearances.
Later in January 2007 Steve joined Eastleigh and he scored six goals before the end of the 2006/07 campaign. In the summer of 2007 he signed an extension to his Eastleigh contract but in November 2007 Steve was ruled out for the remainder of 2007/08 due to a knee injury. He left the club at the end of season.
In the summer of 2008 he joined Isthmian League Premier Division club Sutton but after featuring in some of their pre-season friendlies Steve's knee problem flared up again and before the season proper started he was ruled out for eight months. In March 2009 he was linked with a move back to Fisher having still not played competitively for Sutton but Steve decided against rejoining his former club and on 4.4.09 he finally made his debut for Sutton when he came on as a substitute in a home match against Dartford. Steve made a dramatic impact by scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot just six minutes after his introduction and he made three more sub appearances before the end of 2008/09. One of his outings came in a 2-0 defeat at Margate on 18.4.09 and Steve finished the season having scored twice.
He continued to be troubled by injuries during the 2009/10 campaign but managed to score six goals from 25 Isthmian League appearances (16 as sub). Steve then only played nine games for Sutton during 2010/11 (six as sub) without scoring and at the end of the season he retired aged 34.
Steve's brother Danny was a professional heavyweight boxer from 1997 to 2002 and in 2009 he sparred with David Haye ahead of his World Title fight against giant Russian Nikolay Valuev.
