Tall, agile keeper who started his career with Dartford Amateurs during the 1973/74 season before joining Cray in April 1975.
Steve stayed with Cray until the end of the 1976/77 campaign and also played for South London-based Sunday side 2-7-9 who reached the semi-finals of the FA Sunday Cup during 1975/76.
In the summer of 1977 Steve left Cray to link up with Dartford Glentworth.
His next move took him to Gravesend & Northfleet for 1978/79 where Steve became understudy to former Margate keeper Lee Smelt.
In February 1980 Steve signed for Margate on loan as a replacement for the departed Bryan Parry and made his debut in a 2-0 defeat at Andover in a Southern League match on 9.2.80. He had a good game and according to the Thanet Times displayed "fine handling and positioning". Steve went on to play in each of the remaining games of the 1979/80 season and made a total of 19 appearances. His best performance came in a 2-0 win at Hastings on 22.4.80 and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said that Steve pulled off some "tremendous saves".
In the summer of 1980 Steve made his move from Gravesend permanent and he began the 1980/81 season well. The Thanet Times said that he made some "brilliant saves" in a 3-0 defeat at Bognor Regis on 6.9.80 and on 16.9.80 Steve made a vital penalty save in the last minute of extra time as Margate hung on to win 4-3 at Sittingbourne in an FA Cup replay. On 20.9.80 Steve made an error that condemned Margate to a 2-1 defeat against Dartford and the Thanet Times report said that he "dropped a left wing centre as though it were a freshly-baked bun coming straight from a hot oven". Shortly after that Steve was dropped for two games and Phil Brooman replaced him but he soon re-established himself as first-choice. However an error in a 3-1 home defeat against Hounslow on 15.11.80 effectively brought Steve's Margate career to an end. He was beaten by a weak shot and the mistake left him holding his head in his hands. The Thanet times report said "a softer goal you will not see". Manager Terry Morris cancelled Steve's registration after the match but claimed it was a financial decision, saying "he did a good job for us but his departure is all a question of economics." He'd made 20 appearances during the season.
Steve then rejoined Gravesend but moved on to Darenth for the 1981/82 campaign.
He then linked up with Alma Swanley for the 1982/83 season before moving on to Slade Green during 1983/84.
Steve was tragically killed in August 1984 after being hit by a car, he was only 30 years old.
