5' 11" tall forward born in Leigh, near Southend who was educated at Eastwood High School and started his career with Southend, joining the Shrimpers straight from school in April 1971. In October 1973 Steve signed professional forms and in September of that year he was picked to train with the England Youth squad but didn't win a cap. He scored 21 goals for Southend's youth and reserve teams during 1973/74 and went on to make eight first team appearances spanning the 1974/75 and 1975/76 seasons.

In November 1975 Steve joined Margate on loan and made his debut on 8.11.75 in a game against Kettering at Hartsdown. He displayed good aerial ability and went on to make a total of four appearances without scoring before returning to Southend having been carried off with a badly injured ankle during a 2-1 win over Ramsgate on 25.11.75.

Later in the 1975/76 season Steve signed for Chelmsford and scored regularly for them. He also spent the 1976/77 campaign there.

During the 1986/87 season Steve played a handful of games for Essex-based Vauxhall-Opel (Isthmian) League club Barton Rovers .

An article about Steve in Southend's 1972 handbook revealed that his favourite player was Alan Ball and that his main hobbies were freshwater fishing and sea fishing.
