Ryan linked up with Isthmian League Premier Division club Grays in the summer of 2002 and made ten league appearances (one as sub) without scoring there before being released in March 2003.

He immediately moved on to Purfleet and made nine Isthmian League Premier Division appearances (four as sub) without scoring for them before the end of the 2002/03 season.

In the summer of 2003 Ryan was signed by Scottish Division 2 club Hamilton and made his debut for them as a substitute in a 3-2 home defeat against St.Johnstone in the Scottish League Cup on 2.8.03. He played twice more before falling out of favour.

In January 2004 Ryan signed for Division 1 club Raith but although he was sometimes on the bench for the senior side he didn't feature in the first team during what remained of the 2003/04 campaign. Ryan finally made his debut for Rovers as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat at St.Johnstone on 28.8.04 and he went on to make a total of five appearances (three as sub) before being released in January 2005.

Ryan then returned to England and joined Conference club Dagenham & Redbridge. He played in their 3-1 defeat against Margate in a Conference Cup tie at Ashford on 25.1.05 but in April 2005 Ryan was released by the Daggers.

He finished the 2004/05 season at Redbridge and then joined Conference club Gravesend & Northfleet in the summer of 2005.

He made one more appearance - as a substitute in a 1-0 home defeat against Dartford in the FA Trophy on 12.11.05 - before being released shortly afterwards.

Later in November 2005 Ryan signed for Conference South club Bishop's Stortford and he spent the remainder of the 2005/06 campaign there.

In July 2006 Ryan joined Welsh Premier League side Llanelli and on 13.7.06 he came on as a 90th minute substitute as they won 2-1 at Swedish club Gefle in a UEFA Cup tie. He then started the home leg against Gefle on 27.7.06 and Llanelli progressed after a 0-0 draw. Ryan didn't play again for the Welsh club and in October 2006 he returned to the Isthmian League Premier Division when he signed for Tonbridge.

Ryan went on to make 18 league appearances (four as sub) for the Angels and scored once - in a 3-2 win at AFC Wimbledon on 18.11.06 - before being released in February 2007.

He finished the 2006/07 season with Braintree where he played three times in the Conference South.

In the summer of 2007 Ryan played in some friendlies for Heybridge but he ended up starting the 2007/08 campaign back at Braintree. Within weeks of the new season starting he moved on to Billericay but Ryan only played twice for them in the Isthmian League Premier Division before being released in November 2007.

His next move took him to Welling and Ryan featured regularly for them in the Conference South up to March 2008 when he joined Isthmian League Division 1 North outfit Wivenhoe.

After making only two appearances for Wivenhoe Ryan moved on to Boreham Wood before the end of March 2008.

The Wood were his fifth club of the season and Ryan made six Isthmian League Premier Division appearances for them before the 2007/08 campaign ended.

After a spell out of football Ryan linked up with Essex Senior League club Stansted in February 2009 and he spent the remainder of 2008/09 with them.

In September 2009 he moved on to Conference South side St.Albans and Ryan made his debut for them as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat against Heybridge in the FA Cup on 26.9.09. He made one further sub appearance for the first team before leaving the club in November 2009 following a spell in the reserves.

Ryan then rejoined Stansted and in January 2010 he linked up with Harlow of the Isthmian League Division 1 North. He made ten league appearances for them without scoring before the end of the 2009/10 campaign.

In the summer of 2010 Ryan played in some of Harlow's friendlies before signing for Waltham Abbey in time for the start of the 2010/11 season proper. He went on to score once from 22 appearances in the Isthmian League Division 1 North and Ryan stayed with Abbey for the start of the 2011/12 campaign too.

In October 2011 he rejoined Harlow and Ryan made 17 league appearances (four as sub) for the Hawks without scoring before being released in July 2012. Harlow issued a statement saying "We would like to thank Ryan for all his efforts while at the club, and wish him all the best for the future."

After leaving Harlow Ryan played in some friendlies for Grays but he then signed for Kent League newcomers Whyteleafe in time for the first match of the 2012/13 season.

In the summer of 2013 Ryan joined Grays of the Isthmian League Premier Division but only made three appearances there before moving on to Heybridge of Division 1 North early in March 2014.

In the summer of 2014 Ryan became player-coach at Division 1 North club AFC Sudbury and said "I think maybe in the past Sudbury had players with the technical ability to get there or thereabouts, but lacked a bit of a determined streak. I will not let that happen again, and certainly on the mental side, we will be digging in. I have taken a few sessions already and am pushing them more than they have been pushed before and I am only getting my teeth into them now. It is demanding, but I am hoping what does not kill them makes them stronger."
