Versatile player born in Sale, Cheshire who was reputed to have one of the longest throw-ins in football. Ron started his career with West Ham and made 36 appearances for the Hammers during World War II, scoring twice. He went on to make three Football League appearances during the 1946/47 and 1947/48 seasons before leaving the club at the end of 1949/50.
In July 1950 Ron moved to Margate and made his debut on 23.8.50 in a 3-0 defeat at Snowdown. It was the opening day of the 1950/51 campaign and Almer Hall's first game in charge of Margate. Ron had played with Almer at West Ham. He went on to make 35 appearances during the season and scored four goals. Ron usually played as a centre-back but he also featured in midfield and as a striker on occasions.
During the 1951/52 season Ron made a further 30 appearances without scoring, initially wearing the number five shirt before moving into midfield early in 1952. He also played twice as a striker. In the summer of 1952 Ron left the club and joined Betteshanger.
He later coached Hornchurch & Upminster, Aveley and Barking before emigrating to Virginia, USA.
During his time with West Ham and Margate Ron worked as a draughtsman for the Ford Motor Company in Dagenham. Ron Vallance who played twice for Margate during 1950/51 worked in the same office.
