Tricky, laid-back 6' 1" tall striker born in Clapham, London who was christened Jairzinho Baptiste in honour of the great Brazilian striker but was always known as 'Rocky' during his football career.
Rocky had spells with Chelsea and then Brentford as a youngster but having been released by the Bees he dropped into amateur football.
He had a spell playing for Middlesex County League club Willesden Constantine that included the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons and then early in 1999 Rocky was signed by Wealdstone.
He scored ten goals for Wealdstone before the end of the 1998/99 campaign and Rocky then notched up 16 goals during 1999/00. His tally included consecutive FA Cup hat-tricks in ties against Ford and then Staines.
In February 2000 Rocky moved to Staines on loan and he scored six Isthmian League goals there before the 1999/00 season finished.
In August 2000 he joined Conference club Hayes as a non-contract player and on 30.9.00 Rocky scored a sensational hat-trick in a 4-3 win at Northwich. All three goals came in a four minute spell at the end of the first half.
Rocky's form for Hayes led to 2nd Division Luton signing him on a short-term contract until the end of the 2000/01 campaign in October 2000. He'd impressed manager Ricky Hill when scoring in a trial match against Queens Park Rangers. Hill described Rocky as being "the Kanu of non-league football" and he made his first team debut as a 75th minute substitute in a 1-1 draw at Bury on 4.11.00. Future Margate player Gavin McGowan was an unused sub for Luton that day. Rocky also played for 15 minutes as a substitute in a 3-0 home defeat against Bristol City on 11.11.00 and on 23.12.00 he took to the field for the last seven minutes of a 4-1 defeat at Reading. It turned out to be his last appearance for Luton.
In March 2001 Rocky was loaned back to Hayes and scored five times for the Missioners before the 2000/01 campaign finished. His tally included two goals in a 3-1 win over Hednesford and in all Rocky scored 11 goals from 22 appearances (one as sub) for Hayes during 2000/01.
He was released by Luton at the end of the season and in June 2001 Rocky signed for Conference club Farnborough. He scored 11 goals in 22 outings (seven as sub) during the 2001/02 campaign and then bagged 21 goals during the 2002/03 season. Rocky's tally included Farnborough's goal in their 5-1 defeat against Arsenal (including Kanu) at Highbury in the FA Cup 3rd Round on 25.1.03 and future Margate players Darren Annon and Lenny Piper also took part in the tie.
In April 2003 Rocky had a trial with Southend and scored on his reserve team debut in a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace Reserves on 8.4.03. He made one more appearance before returning to Farnborough. A month earlier he'd been due to have a trial at Scunthorpe but didn't make it to the club due to a mix up over the date.
In June 2003 Rocky followed Farnborough manager Graham Westley to Stevenage and on 25.8.03 he scored in a 4-1 win over Margate at Dover in the Conference. He'd managed four goals from 25 appearances (16 as sub) when he was released by Stevenage in February 2004.
Rocky then joined Margate, signing a contract to the end of the 2003/04 season, and casually rolled home the only goal of the game from a tight angle on his debut against Telford at Dover on 21.2.04. The Thanet Times said he'd "made himself an instant hero to Margate fans after delivering a knockout blow 30 minutes into his debut" and felt Rocky had "shone". He told the paper "I'm happy to be back and playing for Margate. It was an easy decision to come down here. Chris (Kinnear) spoke to me at the start of the season, but I decided not to come." Chris Kinnear said "He did what we expected. He's got pace and he runs hard. He's used to scoring, and he took his goal well. We wanted him in the summer."
Rocky played in Margate's next match - a 4-2 defeat at Leigh on 28.2.04 - and the Thanet Times said he was "Gate's best performer in a grim game". He then missed a Kent Senior Cup tie against Welling before marking his return to the side with a goal as Margate drew 3-3 with Dagenham & Redbridge in a Conference game at Dover on 6.3.04. On 16.3.04 Rocky scored twice in a 3-1 win over Accrington at Dover and the Nationwide football site said he turned in "a scintillating performance". He was also on target in Margate's next game - a 3-1 defeat against Hereford at Dover on 20.3.04 - and the goal took Rocky's tally to five in his first six outings. In its report on a 3-1 win at Dover in the Kent Senior Cup on 23.3.04 the Isle of Thanet Gazette said he "again posed the greatest threat, his pace and touch causing the Dover defence no end of problems".
At the start of April 2004 Rocky spoke to The Non-League Paper about Chris Kinnear and said "He's helped me bring my game on. I'm sure under him I'll only get better." Rocky finished off the campaign by playing as Margate won 2-1 at Folkestone on 28.4.04 to win the Kent Senior Cup and that was his eighth game without a goal. In all he'd scored five times in 14 appearances. In its end of season round-up the Isle of Thanet Gazette said Rocky had become an "instant fans' hero with his hard-working performances after signing in February" and felt he would "be a key player if he stays on".
During the summer of 2004 Rocky had a trial spell with Grays and played in a friendly for them on 27.7.04. He was also linked with possible moves to both Gravesend & Northfleet and Aldershot but ended up staying with Margate for the 2004/05 campaign - the club's first in the new Conference South following enforced demotion.
After failing to score in the opening four matches of the season Rocky got off the mark with a 92nd minute winner as Margate beat Eastbourne Borough 2-1 at Ashford on 28.8.04 and the Thanet Times said he "looked to be at his most lively so far". Rocky got his next goal in a 3-1 win over Hayes at Ashford on 4.9.04 and soon afterwards he found the net in three consecutive matches, starting with a strike in a 7-3 defeat at Lewes on 14.9.04. He then scored twice in a 4-2 win at Maidenhead on 18.9.04 and the Thanet Times said Rocky's first goal was "a true solo effort" as he picked the ball up on the left flank, beat two defenders and slotted home. His scoring run ended with a goal in a 2-1 win over Thurrock at Ashford on 21.9.04 and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said it "came from nothing" as Rocky spun and fired home from fully 25 yards. The Gazette said it was "a scorching shot" that flew into the top corner.
After his prolific spell in September 2004 Rocky struggled for goals over the course of the next few weeks and when he found the net in a 5-1 win over Havant & Waterlooville at Ashford on 13.11.04 it ended a barren run of eight matches. Rocky scored three more goals before the end of 2004 to take his tally for the season up to ten.
He continued to be a fixture in the number ten shirt as 2005 began and the Thanet Times said Rocky was "probably more influential than at any stage this season" in a 2-1 win at Thurrock on 29.1.05. The paper then bemoaned Margate missing numerous chances in a 2-0 defeat at Newport on 12.2.05 and said that Rocky was "particularly guilty after spurning the best of Margate's opportunities". It turned out to be the last of a six game run without a goal for him and Rocky then got back on track when he scored in a 2-0 win over Maidenhead at Ashford on 15.2.05. The Thanet Times said he had "an unusually ineffective afternoon" in a 1-1 draw with Sutton at Ashford on 19.2.05 but felt Rocky "put in one of his better performances" as Margate drew 2-2 at Weston-Super-Mare on 26.2.05.
He got his 12th goal of the season in a 4-3 win over Cray in a Kent Senior Cup tie played at Ramsgate on 1.3.05 but on 12.3.05 Rocky had an afternoon to forget as Margate travelled to Hornchurch for a Conference South match. The Thanet Times' report on a 1-0 defeat was headlined "Rocky Horror Show" and the paper said he "missed a sitter in the 64th minute and within two minutes played a terrible backpass which led to a Hornchurch penalty". The report explained how his "woeful and needless" backpass had resulted in the Urchins' future Margate striker Chris Stowe running clear, forcing keeper Peter Trego to bring him down to concede a penalty. Rocky was instantly substituted so that Nej Hussein could take over in goal. The paper said Rocky had "cost Margate the points".
His next outing in a 2-1 defeat at Crawley in a Conference Cup tie on 15.3.05 saw Rocky turn in a "much-improved performance" according to the Isle of Thanet Gazette but he still struggled to find the net as regularly as he had done before the turn of the year. He got his 13th goal in a 2-1 defeat against Dorchester at Ashford on 9.4.05 and then took his tally to 14 by heading the winner as Margate beat Dover 2-1 to win the Kent Senior Cup at Folkestone on 2.5.05. It was Rocky's last appearance as he left the club at the end of the season following Margate's relegation to the Isthmian League Premier Division. He'd been the team's only ever-present during 2004/05 and played 51 times in all.
In July 2005 Rocky played in friendlies for Basingstoke and scored for them in a match against Wycombe but he ended up joining Havant & Waterlooville for the 2005/06 campaign proper. He scored 29 goals during the season and won the Hawks' 'Supporters' Player of the Year' and 'Players' Player of the Year' awards. Rocky did even better during the 2006/07 campaign, scoring 36 times, and then racked up a further 28 goals during 2007/08. His tally include a late equaliser as Havant & Waterlooville drew 1-1 at Swansea in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup in January 2008 and Rocky then scored again as the Hawks won the replay 4-2 to set up a famous tie at Liverpool in the 4th Round.
Ahead of the match at Anfield on 26.1.08 Rocky told the national press he was a lifelong Liverpool fan and said "It's going to be an amazing feeling going to Liverpool and seeing Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres and playing on the Anfield pitch." Havant & Waterlooville ended up losing 5-2 but twice led a strong Liverpool side.
At the end of the 2007/08 season Rocky was said to have left Havant & Waterlooville and at that time he was doing 'The Knowledge' to become a London taxi driver. Despite being a free agent he played in some of the Hawks summer 2008 friendlies and ended up starting 2008/09 with the club before finally moving on at the end of September 2008. Rocky had scored 85 goals from 145 outings (13 as sub) by then.
He joined Conference South club Maidenhead after leaving Havant & Waterlooville but they released him in March 2009.
Rocky then signed for AFC Wimbledon, also in the Conference South, at the end of March 2009 and scored on his debut after coming on as a substitute in a 2-2 draw at Bromley. It was his only game for the Dons.
In the summer of 2009 Rocky joined Isthmian League Premier Division outfit Harrow and scored 22 goals for them during the 2009/10 campaign. His tally included a penalty in a 3-0 win over Margate on 29.8.09. Rocky also infamously managed the so-called 'miss of the century' in a 5-3 home win over Waltham Abbey on 28.11.09, shooting wide of an open goal when it seemed almost impossible not to score. The video footage was an internet sensation and gained Rocky international notoriety.
He stayed with Harrow for the 2010/11 season and scored 28 goals including a hat-trick in a 7-1 win at Horsham on 18.1.11. Rocky also scored four times in a 6-0 home win over Horsham on 5.2.11.
In the summer of 2011 he signed for Conference South club Thurrock but only made a few appearances before moving on to Isthmian League Premier Division outfit Kingstonian in September 2011. Rocky was 39 by then and after only a few weeks with the K's he was released having only played once for them in the league.
After a year out of senior football Rocky resurfaced in October 2012 when he joined Wingate & Finchley of the Isthmian League Premier Division around two months after his 40th birthday. He made four substitute appearances for Wingate in the league and scored once - in a 3-1 defeat at Lewes on 20.10.12 - before leaving the club.
After another year out of the game Rocky signed for Isthmian League Division 1 South outfit Eastbourne Town in October 2013 aged 41 and had a penalty saved on his debut at they drew 0-0 with East Thurrock in an FA Trophy tie on 19.10.13. Rocky scored his first goal for Eastbourne on 26.10.13 when he headed home a cross from former Margate player Kery Kedze in a 2-1 home defeat against Chipstead.
