Rex made his debut for the Gills in a game at Torquay on 7.3.53 and marked the occasion with a goal. He finished the 1952/53 campaign with a record of four goals from only seven appearances.
During the following two seasons Rex only made three more first team appearances without adding to his goal tally and in the summer of 1955 he left the Gills.
Rex joined Hastings for the 1955/56 campaign and scored 35 goals during the 1956/57 season before joining Margate in May 1957 in a part-exchange deal that took Lionel Phillips to Hastings.
Rex made his Margate debut in a 5-0 win at Ashford on 24.8.57 - the opening day of the 1957/58 season - but then endured months of terrible injury problems. He broke his collar bone during November and then suffered from 'flu for a lengthy spell before injuring his ankle. The Isle of Thanet Gazette even ran a story about him headlined "Unluckiest Footballer in the Kent League". As a result Rex only played two more games for the first team, although he did play for the reserves on numerous occasions. He scored nine goals for them including a hat-trick against Deal Reserves in October 1957. In February 1958 he left the club and signed for Ashford.
He was still with Ashford during 1958/59, mostly playing in the reserves where he was a regular scorer.
By 1971 Rex was living in Hastings.
