Aggressive, whole-hearted Hendon-born player who started his career with Tonbridge. His father John had also played for the Angels in the 1950's and 1960's. Ray made his first team debut during 1974/75 and then had short spells with Hastings, Crawley and Sevenoaks before returning to Tonbridge.

He was initially a centre-back but later became a striker and scored for the Angels in a 3-1 win at Margate on 16.8.80. Ray was the club's 'Supporters' Player of the Year' for the 1980/81 campaign.

In March 1982 he had a loan spell at Ashford and made three Southern League appearances there before embarking on another loan stint at Crawley. Ray made four appearances for the Sussex club and then returned to Tonbridge.

In September 1983 Ray joined Thanet from Tonbridge and made his debut as United were hammered 7-0 at home by Tooting & Mitcham in an FA Cup tie on 1.10.83. He played as a striker and according to the local Adscene newspaper his performance was "the only bright spot" of a bad day. Ray went on to play a handful of games up front, scoring in a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of his old club Tonbridge on 11.10.83, but it was his only goal for United and he generally played as a centre-back. The Isle of Thanet Gazette described him as being "commanding" in defence and Ray made a total of 15 appearances before leaving the club to join Gravesend & Northfleet early in January 1984.

Ray went on to make 15 appearances (two as sub) for the Fleet and scored once before rejoining Tonbridge during 1984/85. He also spent the 1985/86 and 1986/87 seasons with the Angels.
