Watford-born keeper who began his career as a junior with Birchington Athletic Colts during the 1968/69 season. Phil then spent many years turning out for various local amateur clubs and during the 1977/78 season he made a few appearances in Margate's reserve side.
During the 1981/82 campaign he played for Ramsgate, mainly in the reserves, and Phil later returned to Hartsdown Park where he made numerous appearances for Thanet United's reserves during the 1984/85 and 1985/86 seasons.
When the reserves' first-choice keeper Glen Porter was called into Thanet's first team during the 1986/87 campaign Phil had an extended run in the second string and he himself made two first team appearances at the end of 1986. Phil made his debut in a Southern League game at Dover on 26.12.86 as a late replacement for 'flu victim Joe Radford. Although United went down 5-1 the Isle of Thanet Gazette said that he "could scarcely be blamed for any of the goals that beat him". Phil also played in Thanet's 2-1 defeat at Corinthian the following day and the paper said that he had "put up a good display" in both matches.
Phil played exclusively for Thanet's reserves during the 1987/88 season, making 21 appearances for them and winning their 'Player of the Year' award.
He stayed with the club for the start of the 1988/89 campaign and made four reserve team appearances during the early part of the season. Phil also played once for the first team, turning out in a 4-0 defeat at Dover on 15.11.88 despite being concussed in a car crash on his way to the game. He had to play as there was nobody else available and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said Phil deserved "maximum marks for effort". He left United soon afterwards and dropped back into local football where he carried on playing for several more seasons.
During the 20006/07 campaign Phil was manager of Margate's Under-14's side and during the 2010/11 season he still living locally and coaching in Margate FC's youth set-up.
His younger brother Steve also played for Margate and Thanet United.
