London-born goalkeeper who began his career in the Thanet League with Spartans before joining Margate for the 1963/64 season. Phil made nine reserve team appearances during the campaign and also played twice for the senior side.

He made his first team debut as an 18 year-old on 28.12.63 in a Southern League game against Rugby at Hartsdown and although Margate went down 2-1 Phil did well and kept his place for the home game with Cambridge United on 4.1.64. His performance in the 3-3 draw led to the local paper saying that he was "a good prospect" who deserved a run in the side. However it didn't happen and Phil returned to the reserves for the remainder of the campaign.

He spent the 1964/65 season playing for Northwood in the Thanet Premier Sunday League.

Phil then moved to Gravesend & Northfleet and spent the 1965/66 and 1966/67 seasons with them, making 73 appearances, before joining Canterbury for the 1967/68 campaign.

Phil made 31 Southern League appearances for City during 1967/68 and on 9.5.68 he played as a striker in a game at Dunstable. Canterbury won 6-1 and remarkably Phil scored a hat-trick.

In the summer of 1968 he moved on to Tonbridge and had the misfortune to be in goal as Margate thrashed the Angels 8-0 in a friendly at Hartsdown Park on 5.8.68. It was the day of Phil's 25th birthday. Phil later dropped back into junior football and often played as a striker in the local leagues for clubs such as Westgate and Lonsdale during the 1970's.

During the 1973/74 season he did some coaching in Canada. Phil also had a spell in Toronto, Canada in the summer of 1975 where he played for London City alongside the likes of Steve Breach, Barry Brown, Ray Flannigan, John Hold, Graham Sawyer and Paul Smith.

In December 1979 a goalkeeping crisis at Margate saw Phil return to the club to make a one-off appearance, almost 16 years after his last one. This constituted the longest gap between games of any player in the club's history. Regular keeper Bryan Parry was unavailable for an FA Trophy tie at Hastings on 1.12.79 and Phil was his emergency replacement, at the time he was playing in the Thanet League for Lonsdale. Although Margate lost the match 3-0 Phil "gave a typically fearless display" according to the Thanet Times.

During the 1980/81 season Phil made five further sporadic appearances, again helping out when the club's regular keepers were unavailable. He wore distinctive red goalkeeping gloves for his first appearance of the campaign - a 2-1 win over Crawley at Hartsdown on 30.9.80 - and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said that Phil was "totally adequate and could easily become a regular in the side". He was also described as being "chirpy" and "evergreen" and Margate manager Terry Morris said "I knew Brooman would give a good account of himself and he did not let me down." During a 3-1 defeat at Dartford on 29.11.80 Phil "gave Margate's best goalkeeping display of the season" according to the Thanet Times and the local press also praised his bravery and agility during the campaign. In fact the Isle of Thanet Gazette said that Phil was "clearly Margate's most competent keeper".

The 1981/82 season saw Phil return to Hartsdown yet again, he played a few games for Thanet's reserves during the campaign and also made three further first team appearances. Phil's first outing of the season was a 3-1 defeat at Gosport on 13.4.82 and he also deputised for Colin Page in the last two games of the campaign. During the 2-1 defeat at Hastings on 1.5.82 Phil "pulled off some exceptional saves" according to the Thanet Times and a 4-3 home defeat at the hands of Andover on 3.5.82 was his final appearance, over 18 years after his first.

He then helped out with coaching during the early part of the 1982/83 season before joining Ramsgate early in 1983, playing regularly for their first team. Phil then continued to play local football for several more seasons.

He played the last football of his career during the 1990's when he turned out for Thanet League club Margate Athletic Old Boys whose squad of veterans also included a host of other former Margate / Thanet players.

In 2012 Phil was still living in Thanet.
