Talented player born in Depwade, Norfolk who started his career with Norwich as a youth but never made the first team there.
In the summer of 1966 Peter joined King's Lynn and on 21.9.66 he became the club's first ever substitute when he took to the field during a 3-1 home win over Nuneaton in the Southern League. He scored five goals during 1966/67 and another 13 during the 1967/68 season. Peter's tally included a goal in the East Anglian Cup Final as King's Lynn beat Stevenage 2-0 on 8.5.68. During the 1968/69 campaign he scored ten goals but Peter only managed one during 1969/70.
In the summer of 1970 he joined Romford and went on to spend two full seasons there.
During the 1972/73 campaign Peter moved to Maidstone and became known for playing in white boots during his three years there.
In December 1975 Peter signed for Margate after the club had previously failed to sign him in August of that year. He made his debut in a 4-1 away win at Wealdstone on New Year's Day 1976 and Peter impressed with what the local press referred to as his "shrewd positioning" and "telling distribution". He went on to become a regular during the second half of the 1975/76 season and made 30 appearances (two as sub) before the end of the campaign, scoring once with a shot from the edge of the penalty area in a 3-1 win over Hillingdon on 2.3.76. The local press said that Peter gave the Margate midfield "extra craft" and he was said to have been "master-minding the midfield" during a 4-1 win over Bath on 14.2.76.
On 22.4.76 Peter played as Margate won 2-0 at Canterbury in the 1st Leg of the Kent Floodlight Trophy Final and he also featured in the 2nd Leg at Hartsdown Park on 24.4.76 which the visitors won 2-1 after extra time. The result meant Margate took the trophy with a 3-2 aggregate win but Peter left the club at the end of the season having refused the revised terms offered to him.
