6' 0" tall solid and dependable defender who was born in Barnsley and played eight times for England's Youth team.

Peter started his career with Worsborough Bridge Miners Welfare before moving on to 3rd Division club Barnsley. He spent six years there but found first team opportunities hard to come by.

In July 1959 he moved to Chelmsford and went on to spend seven years with the Essex club.

In May 1966 Peter joined Margate at the same time as his Chelmsford team-mates David Pye and Ron Smillie and before the month was out he was in the squad that travelled to West Germany for a three match tour.

Peter became Margate's club captain and made his competitive debut in a 5-2 win over Barry at Hartsdown Park on 20.8.66. It was the opening day of the 1966/67 season. Peter went on to make a total of 64 appearances without scoring as Margate won promotion from the Southern League Division One by finishing as runners-up. He usually played at right-back but also featured on the left-hand side on occasions. Peter's tough tackling and sound positional sense were his main assets.

He left Margate at the end of the season due to business commitments and returned to Chelmsford where he was something of a legend, becoming player-manager of their reserve team.

By the time Peter retired in 1969 he'd made 376 appearances for Chelmsford and he was still playing local football in the area when he was well into his fifties.

In later years a Sunday League in the Chelmsford area named one of their competitions 'The Peter Gillott Reserve Team Cup' in his honour.

In October 2008 Peter played for an ex-Chelmsford X1 in a charity match at the club's Melbourne Park ground and he was 73 at the time.
