Tough-tackling local player who captained Kent's youth team during his schooldays before starting his senior career with Ramsgate.
Paul made his first team debut for the Rams aged 16 during the 1989/90 season and stayed with the club for 1990/91. He played as the Rams lost 1-0 at home to Margate in an FA Cup tie on 1.9.90 and in the build-up to the game the Isle of Thanet Gazette said that Paul had "impressed many people with his excellent performances at left-back". He made a total of 39 appearances during the season and scored four goals.
In the summer of 1991 Paul moved on to Dartford but at the start of September 1991 he made a swift return to Thanet and signed for Margate.
The Isle of Thanet Gazette said Paul would be "a big bonus to the team because not only is he a talented defender (he is) also a dangerous attacker". He made his debut as Margate went down 1-0 to Gosport at Hartsdown Park on 7.9.91 and manager Tommy Taylor told the Thanet Extra "I was very pleased with the performance of Paul Lamb at left-back. He will develop into a great asset". A week later Paul wore the number three shirt again as Margate lost 2-1 at Tooting & Mitcham in the FA Cup and he then made two substitute appearances. The second of them was in a 1-0 win in an FA Trophy tie at Abingdon on 24.9.91 and the Gazette said Paul "acquitted himself with flying colours". He stayed with the club for a few more weeks but didn't play for the first team again and in November 1991 Paul went back to Ramsgate.
In February 1992 Paul left the Rams once more and joined Gravesend & Northfleet where he had great success in the years that followed.
Paul won the Fleet's 'Young Player of the Year' award for the 1992/93 season and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said he was "outstanding at full-back" in a 2-0 win at Margate on 22.3.94. On 2.12.95 he played in the Fleet's famous FA Cup 3rd Round tie at Aston Villa along with his future Margate team-mates Lee Turner and Mark Munday. Villa won the game 3-0. Paul had made over 250 appearances for the Fleet when he rejoined Margate in June 1997 for an undisclosed joint fee that also covered the purchase of Munday.
On 29.7.97 he made his first appearance for Margate for almost six years when he played in midfield during a 3-1 win over Ramsgate that secured the Link Music Cup. Paul then switched to left-back and enjoyed a run of 14 consecutive games there up to and including a 2-1 win over Deal in an FA Cup tie at Hartsdown Park on 11.10.97. After the Deal game manager Chris Kinnear opted to give Eliot Martin a run in the number three shirt so Paul found himself out of favour for a lengthy spell. He didn't start any of Margate's next ten games although he did make five substitute appearances. One of those was in the FA Cup 1st Round tie with Fulham at Hartsdown Park on 16.11.97.
Paul returned to the starting line-up on 29.11.97 when he played in midfield in a 2-2 draw at Corby. He then started Margate's next three games, all in midfield, before picking up an injury that put him out of action for almost a month. He returned in time to feature in a famous 1-0 win at holders Woking in an FA Trophy tie on 10.1.98 and from then on Paul was a regular in the side, almost always playing in midfield. In its report on a 2-0 home win over Weston-Super-Mare on 14.2.98 the Thanet Times praised Paul's shoot-on-sight policy and said he was "always willing to try his luck from any range or angle". A week later - on 21.2.98 - he found the net for the first time but it was from set piece as Paul drove a low free-kick home from just outside the penalty area.
On 7.4.98 he was in the side that beat Redditch 2-0 in the 1st Leg of the Southern League Cup Final at Hartsdown Park and Paul also played in the 2nd Leg on 21.4.98 which the home side won 1-0. That result meant that Margate claimed the trophy with a 2-1 aggregate victory.
He got his second goal of the season in a 2-1 defeat at Cirencester on 2.5.98 and on 4.5.98 Paul featured as Margate beat Gravesend & Northfleet 1-0 at Stonebridge Road on 4.5.98 to win the Kent Senior Cup. He finished 1997/98 having made a total of 52 appearances, eight of them as a substitute.
Paul struggled to gain a regular place at the start of the 1998/99 campaign and in the opening seven games of the season he made three appearances at left-back and three as a substitute. After a run of four matches without starting he played in midfield in a 2-1 home win over Fisher on 15.9.98 and from then on Paul was a fixture in the side once again. Despite being left-footed he often played at right-back and the Thanet Times said he was "rarely found wanting" in a 2-0 win at Cirencester on 17.10.98. On 1.12.98 Paul had a penalty saved in a 2-0 defeat at Folkestone. He scored his only goal of the season in a 2-2 draw with Dartford at Hartsdown Park on 23.1.99 when his corner was caught by the wind and drifted into the net and Paul made a total of 44 appearances (seven as sub) during a campaign which saw Margate promoted to the Southern League Premier Division.
He started the 1999/00 season with a goal on 14.8.99 as Margate pulled off a shock 3-1 win at Worcester and that was part of a run of seven starts in midfield for Paul but after a 3-1 defeat at Newport on 4.9.99 he fell out of favour. He didn't start any of the next nine games although he did feature as a substitute in four of them. On 2.11.99 Paul returned to the starting line-up as Margate beat Tonbridge 3-2 at home and after that he played more regularly, mostly in midfield but sometimes at left-back. The Thanet Times said Paul was a "shining example of Margate's determination" during a 2-0 win over Atherstone at Hartsdown Park on 18.12.99 and "blocked off all attacks on Atherstone's favoured right wing" the paper added he "was a tireless presence in attack". On 21.12.99 Paul scored in a 4-2 home win over Baldock and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said he was "impressive" at left-back in a 1-0 win over visitors Crawley on 3.1.00.
On 15.1.00 Paul was sent off for a 'professional' foul only five minutes after coming on as a substitute in a 3-0 defeat at Boston United and the Thanet Times said he showed "impressive leadership" in midfield after coming on as a substitute in a 1-0 home win over King's Lynn on 22.1.00. A few days later Paul wore the number two shirt as Margate entertained Folkestone in the Kent Senior Cup and scored an excellent individual goal in a 3-2 defeat. He picked the ball up 25 yards out, ran into the box evading two tackles and then calmly slotted the ball inside the far post. Paul was in and out of the side over the weeks that followed but after playing in midfield in a 4-3 win at Merthyr Tydfil on 11.3.00 he didn't start any of the season's remaining 11 matches. However Paul did feature as a substitute in nine of them and ended the campaign having made 44 appearances, 19 of them as a substitute. He scored three goals. The Thanet Times said he'd "played a vital role plugging gaps in a depleted squad".
Paul started the first three games of the 2000/01 season but after playing in midfield in a 0-0 draw at Halesowen on 26.8.00 he lost his place and only featured as a substitute in Margate's next four matches. When he lined up at left-back on 30.9.00 as Margate entertained Banstead in the FA Cup it was Paul's first start for over a month and although the visitors pulled off a shock 1-0 win he was a fixture in the number three shirt after that. In December 2000 Chris Kinnear told the Isle of Thanet Gazette that Paul had "been playing exceptionally well" and the Thanet Times said he was "deserving of the man of the match award" along with Lee Williams for his performance in a 1-0 home win over Tamworth on 24.2.01.
After Margate beat Halesowen 1-0 at Hartsdown Park on 3.3.01 Chris Kinnear told the Thanet Times "I thought Paul Lamb was absolutely magnificent today. He's been playing well recently, but he was great today - it was one of his best performances for a long time". Kinnear was full of praise for Paul once more after a 2-0 home win over Bath on 24.3.01 and told the Thanet Times "Paul Lamb did really well and could have scored twice from left-back which shows that we're not defensive". On 7.4.01 Paul scored his only goal of the season as Margate beat visitors Ilkeston 2-0 and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said he "had another fine game" in a 3-0 home win over Crawley on 16.4.01. The campaign finished with Margate crowned as champions of the Southern League Premier Division to win promotion to the Conference and Paul made 47 appearances (five as sub). He was the joint winner of the 'Supporters Player of the Year' award along with Phil Collins and Lee Williams.
Paul started the 2001/02 season well and the Thanet Times said he "put in a good performance" at left-back as Margate won 1-0 at Boston in the club's first-ever Conference game on 18.8.01. The paper then praised him for a "brilliant saving tackle" in a 2-1 home defeat against Leigh on 25.8.01 whilst The Non-League Paper said Paul "really stamped his authority on the game" as Margate beat Telford 3-1 at Hartsdown Park on 8.9.01. He wore the number three shirt in each of the first 17 matches of the campaign before missing a 2-1 home defeat against Northwich on 20.10.01 but after that Paul was ever-present at left-back for the rest of the season. On 13.11.01 he scored his first goal in a 3-1 win over Bromley in the Kent Senior Cup at Hartsdown Park.
The Thanet Times said Paul was a "strong contender for man of the match with a commanding performance on the left" in its report on a 2-1 home win over Farnborough on 5.1.02 and when he scored in a 3-1 win over visitors Hayes in the FA Trophy on 12.1.02 the paper said Paul's goal capped "a heroic performance". He continued to win praise from the Thanet Times and its report on a 1-1 draw with Scarborough at Hartsdown Park on 26.1.02 the paper said Paul was "solid". He then turned in "a dominant performance" in a 2-0 home win over Leigh on 2.2.02 and Paul was chosen as The Non-League Paper's 'man of the match'. Later in February Chris Kinnear told the Isle of Thanet Gazette "Paul's a very important player for us, especially in dead ball situations. He's made a lot of goals for us that way."
The Gazette said Paul was as Gazette "commanding as ever on the left" in a 2-1 win at Braintree in the FA Trophy on 5.3.02 and on 16.3.02 he scored Margate's goal as they lost 2-1 at home to Morecambe in the quarter final of the competition. Paul's effort was a low drive into the corner from outside the penalty area. On 27.4.02 he scored his fourth goal of the season as Margate thrashed Stalybridge 8-0 at Hartsdown Park and The Non-League Paper said it was "a stunner" as Paul picked the ball up way out on the left flank and lobbed home from just inside the Stalybridge half. He ended the campaign having scored four times in a total of 52 appearances.
Paul was regular in the side at the start of the 2002/03 season and played in each of Margate's first 24 games, almost always as a left wing-back. The Non-League Paper praised him for "some superb defending" in a 3-2 defeat at Nuneaton in the Conference on 14.9.02 and on 21.9.02 Paul scored his first goal of the campaign in a 2-1 win over Doncaster at Margate's temporary home in Dover.
On 16.11.02 he played in a 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient in the 1st Round Proper of the FA Cup and Paul also featured in the replay at Dover on 26.11.02 that Margate won 1-0. On 7.12.02 he was part of the side beaten 3-0 by Cardiff at Dover in the 2nd Round.
After the Cardiff game Paul lost his place to new signing Adrian Clarke and missed two matches altogether before returning as a substitute in a 2-2 draw with Kettering at Hartsdown Park on 28.12.02. He then sat out the next five games through a combination of suspension, injury and Clarke's form in defence before having his first outing for exactly a month as Margate entertained Sittingbourne at Hartsdown on 28.1.03 in a Kent Senior Cup tie. Paul captained the side and scored in a 3-1 win with what the Isle of Thanet Gazette described as an "unstoppable shot from the edge of the area". It was only a brief return to action as he then missed six games, partly due to injury, and didn't play again until 8.3.03 when Margate lost 3-0 at Dagenham & Redbridge. From then on Paul was a regular once more and the Thanet Times said he was "impressive" in midfield during a 3-2 win at Hereford on 29.3.03. A few days later the Isle of Thanet Gazette described him as "assured" at left wing-back in a 3-0 win at Erith & Belvedere in the Kent Senior Cup semi-final on 1.4.03. On 30.4.03 Paul was part of the side that won 2-1 at Welling in the Kent Senior Cup Final and it turned out to be his final game for Margate. Paul had made 38 appearances (three as sub) and scored twice during the season.
In the summer of 2003 he featured in some of Margate's friendlies but before the 2003/04 campaign proper got underway Paul left the club.
In August 2003 he joined Maidstone on a one-year contract despite interest from other clubs but after making 12 appearances for the Stones without scoring Paul moved on to Folkestone in November 2003.
He was a regular in Folkestone's side during the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons and in December 2005 Margate put in a seven-day approach to re-sign Paul but he turned the move down. He was eventually released by Folkestone in September 2006.
In November 2006 Paul joined Ramsgate and played for their reserves in a game at Margate on 14.11.06 before making his senior debut for the Rams in a 4-0 defeat at Leyton on 2.12.06. It was Paul's only first team appearance and a few days later www.kentishfootball.co.uk reported that Folkestone manager Neil Cugley had been in touch with him. Cugley told the website "I spoke to Ramsgate about possibly bringing Lamby back to Folkestone and I spoke to Paul himself and we will review the situation next week depending on if he wants to come to us and also depending on finances again."
He rejoined Folkestone shortly afterwards and played in a 1-0 defeat at Margate on 30.12.06. Paul was released again at the end of the 2006/07campaign having made a career total of 149 appearances for Invicta.
In the summer of 2007 Paul signed for Deal along with his former Margate, Gravesend and Folkestone team-mate Mark Munday. He scored once in 47 appearances (five as sub) during 2007/08 and stayed with the club for the start of the 2008/09 season.
In February 2009 Paul returned to Hartsdown Park to become manager of Margate's Under-18's side but in May 2009 he joined Whitstable as assistant manager to their new boss Mark Munday. He left Whitstable in March 2010 when Munday was sacked.
In July 2010 Paul became Deal's first team coach, taking over from Mark Harrop, but left the club at the end of the 2010/11 season.
Paul returned to Hartsdown Park on 12.5.12 when he took part in a testimonial match for Bill Edwards.
During the 2012/13 campaign Paul coached Ramsgate's Under-9's B team.
He worked as a mechanic for most of his football career.
