Thanet-born player who initially joined Margate in 1959 and played exclusively for the reserves during the 1959/60 and 1960/61 seasons. Martin then emigrated to Australia with his family but returned to the UK in 1964.
In the summer of 1966 he returned to Hartsdown and after impressing in the reserves he made his first team debut as a substitute in a 3-0 home win over Ramsgate in a Southern League Cup tie on 5.12.66. He made his first full appearance on 14.1.67, playing in midfield in a 4-1 win at Wisbech. The local press said that Martin "came through...with flying colours". However he was really a centre-back and later featured in that position, making a total of six first team appearances (one as sub) before the end of the 1966/67 season. Martin was said to be one of the most enthusiastic trainers at the club and he left Margate once again in the summer of 1967.
In 1969 he returned to Australia after completing a keyboard apprenticeship at Thanet Press and in 1972 he was captain of Kwinana United in the Western Australia League. Martin was awarded the Rothmans Gold Medal for being voted the best and fairest player in the state for 1972 and the Sunday Times of Perth referred to him as a "smiling colossus" and "soccer's no. 1 stalwart".
Martin later returned to the UK and played for Ramsgate Reserves during the 1977/78 season.
