6' 1" tall defender born in Plumstead who began his career with Welling as a youth at a time when they were an amateur club playing local football. Les also played Plumstead Maybloom in the South London Sunday League.
In September 1972 Les joined Charlton as an apprentice and on 10.8.74 he played at Hartsdown Park as Charlton lost 1-0 to Margate in a friendly. He made his senior debut for the Addicks during the 1975/76 season and went on to make almost 400 first team appearances for the club. Les was Charlton's 'Player of the Year' for 1979/80 and in 1984 he was granted a testimonial when Arsenal visited The Valley.
After almost 14 years with Charlton Les joined Brighton in July 1986 and then in March 1987 he moved on to Gillingham, initially on loan before a permanent deal was struck.
In August 1988 Les dropped out of league football and signed for Maidstone where he was a regular member of the side that won the GM Vauxhall Conference in the 1988/89 season, thus gaining promotion to the Football League.
At the end of February 1991 Les was released by Maidstone and joined Margate. He made his debut at right-back in a 3-0 win at Canterbury on 6.3.91 and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said he "gave a solid display". Les also wore the number two shirt in Margate's next game - a 2-2 draw with Trowbridge at Hartsdown - and the Thanet Times said he was "outstanding" but it was his last appearance for the club. Before March was out Les signed for Conference side Welling, the club where he'd started his career. Margate manager Tommy Taylor had promised Les that he could leave if a team from a higher division came in for him. Taylor told the Thanet Times "I am sorry to see him go but I always keep my part of the bargain so he left with my blessing."
Les retired at the end of the 1990/91 season.
As a youth he played cricket for England Schoolboys.
