Energetic Maidstone-born attacking midfielder who played his early football for Maidstone-based youth sides Dolphins and South Park Rangers where his father Mick was one of the managers.
Lee was picked up by Chelsea when he was 14 and spent a year in their academy before joining Gillingham as a trainee. He played for the Gills' youth team during 1994/95 and appeared in the Kent Senior Cup Final at the end of the season aged just 16 as Gillingham lost to Charlton. Former Margate player Mike Flanagan was the Gills' manager at the time.
Early in 1996 Lee moved on to Gravesend & Northfleet and made his debut for the Fleet as a substitute in a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Worcester on 16.3.96. Lee went on to make nine appearances without scoring before the end of the 1995/96 campaign. He couldn't break into the first team at the start of 1996/97 and in November 1996 Lee signed for Margate aged 18.
He made his debut in a 2-0 win over Buckingham at Hartsdown Park on 16.11.96 and the Thanet Times said Lee gave an "encouraging" display in midfield. He kept his place for Margate's next game at Yate on 23.11.96 but Lee was sent off for elbowing an opponent and had to serve a three match ban in December. He was a regular in the side after his suspension and scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 home defeat against St.Leonards Stamcroft on 26.12.96. Lee's good form soon earned him a two and a half year contract and at the start of March 1997 the Thanet Times said he was "promising". On 29.3.97 he scored with a low 15-yard drive to secure a 1-0 home win over Dartford and the Times said it was "a real gem". Lee ended the season having scored twice in 21 appearances (three as sub).
In an interview with the short-lived sports newspaper The Far Post ahead of the 1997/98 campaign Margate manager Chris Kinnear said of Lee "I think he's going to be one of the good players. If we hold onto him we will be really lucky. I'm sure he's going to play at a higher level" and Lee went on to have a great season. He was a fixture in the number seven shirt and scored his first goal of 1997/98 in a 3-0 win at Baldock on 20.8.97. In September 1997 Lee scored in consecutive wins for Margate - 3-1 at Weston-Super-Mare on 20.9.97 and 2-0 at home to Baldock on 23.9.97 - and the Thanet Times said he was "impressive" in a 4-0 win over Harrow in an FA Cup tie at Hartsdown Park on 27.9.97. On 4.10.97 Lee scored a great goal in a 2-2 draw at Clevedon that the Thanet Times described as a "spectacular volley from just outside the box" and the Isle of Thanet Gazette said he was "a constant inspiration in midfield" during a 3-1 home win over Erith & Belvedere on 4.11.97. The Thanet Times then praised Lee for being "industrious" in a 3-2 win over visitors Waterlooville on 8.11.97.
On 16.11.97 he played as Margate lost 2-1 to Fulham in an FA Cup 1st Round tie at Hartsdown Park that was shown live on Sky Sports and The Independent noted that Lee "showed some neat touches".
On 20.1.98 Lee scored with what the Isle of Thanet Gazette called a "superb opportunist effort" in a 3-0 home win over Dartford - a long-range lob from just inside the Dartford half that drifted under the bar - and he bagged a brace in a 3-0 win at Bashley in the first leg of the Southern League Cup semi-final on 24.2.98. One of Lee's goals was a stunning volley from just outside the penalty area.
On 7.4.98 he was in the side that beat Redditch 2-0 in the 1st Leg of the Southern League Cup Final at Hartsdown Park and Lee also played in the 2nd Leg on 21.4.98 which the home side won 1-0. That result meant that Margate claimed the trophy with a 2-1 aggregate victory. The Thanet Times said he was "impressive on the right flank" in a 3-1 win over Clevedon at Hartsdown Park on 25.4.98 and on 4.5.98 Lee featured as Margate beat Gravesend & Northfleet 1-0 at Stonebridge Road on 4.5.98 to win the Kent Senior Cup. By the end of the season he'd made 65 appearances (four as sub) and scored nine goals. Lee's younger brother Danny played for Margate's Under-16's side throughout the campaign and won both the managers' and players' 'Player of the Year' awards for them. Danny later played in the Football League for the likes of Gillingham, Millwall, Wycombe and Dagenham & Redbridge.
Lee enjoyed an excellent start to the 1998/99 season and scored in a 1-1 draw with Ashford at Hartsdown Park on 31.8.98. The Isle of Thanet Gazette said he was "probably the best player on the pitch" and although he always wore the number seven shirt Lee sometimes played as an out-and-out striker as the campaign progressed. On 3.10.98 he scored twice in a 3-0 home win over Baldock and on 10.11.98 Lee found the net with what the Gazette described as a "superb shot from the edge of the area" in a 3-3 draw with Folkestone at Hartsdown Park. He followed that up with a 20-yarder into the top corner in a 3-2 defeat at Chelmsford on 14.11.98 and the Thanet Times described Lee as being "talented" in its report on a 3-1 home defeat against Havant & Waterlooville on 21.11.98. The paper also noted that he was "often a target for visiting defenders". Lee then scored twice in a 3-1 win at Andover on 5.12.98 which prompted the Times to dub him Margate's "playmaker-in-chief".
On 9.1.99 a Wimbledon scout was at Hartsdown Park to watch Lee as Margate lost 2-0 to Tonbridge and the Thanet Times said he "exhibited early trickery" whilst being the "target for hard tackles". Around that time there were also rumours of a bid from Norwich for Lee's services. The Isle of Thanet Gazette said that he was "clattered for much of the game" in a 2-1 home win over Ashford on 26.1.99 and afterwards Lee told the paper "I'm very happy about my own form this year. I've got myself a lot better and fitter. I'm a lot more confident this season playing in this more forward role. I enjoy it because I find it's a lot more creative". When asked about the possibility of progressing to the Football League Lee told the paper "I know I could play there". In March 1999 Lee's hopes of a professional career seemed to become a step closer to reality when Spurs invited him for a trial. He did well enough to return to White Hart Lane a few days after his initial trial but nothing came of the Londoners' interest.
Shortly after returning to Hartsdown Park Lee came off the subs bench to score with a diving header in a 3-2 home defeat against Welling in the Kent Senior Cup and on 20.4.99 he got the only goal of the game to secure a 1-0 win at Baldock. However he was strangely subdued as Margate lost 2-1 to Newport IOW at Hartsdown Park on 24.4.99 and the Isle of Thanet Gazette reported that Lee's "mind was obviously elsewhere". Despite his lacklustre performance on the day Lee was announced as having won both the players' and supporters' 'Player of the Year' awards for the 1998/99 campaign after the game but things were about to turn sour.
On 27.4.99 Margate played their penultimate match of the season at Folkestone and Lee wasn't himself in the first half. The Gazette said he was "hapless" and "twice muffed good chances" which resulted in him being substituted by Tom Planck at half-time. Margate went on to lose 2-0 and it turned out to be Lee's last game for the club as he suddenly left with a critical match at Brackley left to play. The Brackley game would decide whether or not Margate would be promoted to the Southern League Premier Division. Chris Kinnear told the Gazette "He has gone for no other reason than it was the end of his contract" although with the season having a week still to run and a vital match coming up that seemed strange to many supporters. The paper noted "there have been suggestions that Spiller had been acting like a prima donna since his Spurs trial, but Kinnear refused to publicly criticize the fans' favourite". The article also said that Lee "had played a big part" in a successful campaign and he'd scored 13 goals in 46 appearances (two as sub) before his dramatic exit.
Lee rejoined Gravesend & Northfleet for the start of the 1999/00 season and Lee himself later said that a fee of £10,000 was involved. He went on to make over 70 appearances for the Fleet before moving on to Chesham towards the end of 2001.
Lee scored twice in 29 league appearances for Chesham before the end of 2001/02 and won the club's 'Supporters' Player of the Year' award for the campaign. He also played twice for the Isthmian League's representative side.
He joined Dover in the summer of 2002 and Lee spent two seasons there before signing a two-year contract with Welling in June 2004.
In May 2005 Lee went back to Dover and scored four goals in 40 Isthmian League appearances for the club during the 2005/06 campaign. During a 3-2 defeat at Ramsgate on 17.4.06 he was involved in an altercation with the Rams' assistant manager Danny Ward which prompted Ramsgate's manager Jimmy Ward to comment on Lee in the Isle of Thanet Gazette. He told the paper "he's just a big-time Charlie, isn't he. It's sad because two or three years ago he was a good player. He was the sort of player I'd have liked to have signed for Ramsgate, but I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole now." Lee stayed with Dover for the 2006/07 season and made another 34 league appearances before linking up with Ashford in May 2007.
In February 2008 he joined Sittingbourne on loan and on 19.4.08 Lee was sent off in a 2-0 win at his old club Dover.
He signed a one-year contract with Folkestone in the summer of 2008 and their manager Neil Cugley said "his attitude has been spot on" but unfortunately Lee suffered a serious knee injury a few weeks into the season and left the club having only made a handful of appearances.
In December 2009 Lee rejoined Folkestone after recovering from an operation on his knee and Cugley told www.kentishfootball.com "I'm as chuffed as anything he wants to come back.... He's a great lad to have around". Lee went on to make seven appearances (five as sub) without scoring before leaving Folkestone again at the end of the 2009/10 campaign. He then retired from senior football aged 32.
In 2011 Lee was Head Coach and Academy Director of a football coaching company called Soccer Elite FA and on 12.5.12 he returned to Hartsdown Park to play in a testimonial match for Bill Edwards.
Lee had another brother called Ricky who played for Dover, Hastings and Sittingbourne amongst others in the 2000's.
