During World War II Knud served in a resistance group during his country's occupation by German troops and then joined the British army after the liberation of Denmark on 5.5.45.
Knud became part of The Royal East Kent Regiment and played football for army side 12th I.T.C. (Canterbury) during the 1945/46 season. He soon became known for his ability to throw the ball one-handed to the halfway line and was part of the 12th I.T.C team that lost 5-1 to Gillingham in the Kent Senior Cup Final at Maidstone on 22.4.46 before returning home to Denmark.
After a spell playing for a club in Copenhagen Knud joined Margate in June 1947 and made his debut on 23.8.47, the opening day of the 1947/48 season, in a 5-2 win over Gravesend & Northfleet at Hartsdown Park. Knud got his opportunity due to regular keeper Doug Read being injured and he played a total of six times, keeping three clean sheets, before his army duties took him to the Far East in September 1947.
In April 1948 Knud returned to Hartsdown Park and played a handful of reserve team games during the remainder of the 1947/48 season before leaving the club for good in the summer of 1948.
In later years Knud was in charge of a large sports centre in the city of Naestved and became an important figure in the sport of handball. He spent 16 years as an international referee and in 1961 Knud took charge of the Men's World Championship Final in Dortmund, West Germany. He was also part of the Danish Handball Association's management team from 1965 to 1970 and coached the women's national handball team from 1963 to 1969. In 1970 he had a spell as manager of the men's national team.
Knud died in Naestved on 2.2.79 aged only 51.
His wife Hanne was also a talented sportswoman who played 25 basketball games for Denmark as well as taking part in four handball matches for her national team.
