Defender who began his career as an apprentice at Portsmouth before moving on to Southampton as a youngster.
John joined Sutton in November 1983 and then linked up with Bromley in the summer of 1984.
He spent over five years at Hayes Lane before leaving Bromley to join Fisher during the 1989/90 campaign.
In September 1990 John signed for Margate and made his debut at left-back in a 3-0 defeat at Erith & Belvedere on 11.9.90. He then missed the next three matches but after returning to the side for a 1-0 win at Whitehawk in the FA Cup on 29.9.90 he became a fixture in the number three shirt for the next couple of months. The Thanet Times said he was "outstanding" in a 3-0 win at Sudbury on 6.10.90 and John made a total of 15 appearances without scoring before leaving the club shortly after featuring in a 5-0 defeat at VS Rugby in an FA Trophy tie on 5.12.90.
He joined Crawley after his departure from Hartsdown Park but only played three times there before being released.
John's next move took him to Croydon early in 1991 and he was still with the club during the 1991/92 season.
In later years John had a spell in charge of Sittingbourne's reserves and in January 2001 he became the Brickies' first team manager. Former Margate player Graham Brenton was appointed as his assistant. John was sacked in September 2001 and had made a few appearances as a player at the start of 2001/02.
In 2010 John was living in Wallington, Surrey.
