Before the end of 1982 John moved on to Canterbury and he then rejoined Dover in March 1983. On 10.9.83 he scored as Dover drew 2-2 with Thanet United and he stayed with the club until the summer of 1985 when he went back to Canterbury.
John went on to spend five seasons with City and was their leading Southern League scorer during 1985/86 (15 goals) and 1987/88 (ten goals). He was voted 'Players' Player of the Year' for both 1986/87 and 1987/88. On 26.12.88 he scored in a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Thanet and also found the net in a 3-1 win at Thanet on 27.3.89. During 1989/90 John briefly left Canterbury to make a one-off appearance for Herne Bay before departing permanently at the end of the season having scored 45 goals in the 186 Southern League appearances he'd made in his two spells with the club.
In the summer of 1990 John joined Folkestone and in January 1991 he was on the move again, this time joining Margate.
He made his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Bury on 12.1.91 and kept his place for Margate's next three games, scoring with what the Thanet Times said was "a fine glancing header" in a 4-1 defeat at Buckingham on 26.1.91. John then found himself out of the side for several weeks and when he returned to make a substitute appearance in a 2-1 home win over Fareham on 2.3.91 it was his last game for Margate's first team. He then spent a few weeks in the reserves, scoring twice in seven appearances (one as sub) for them, before rejoining Canterbury for a third spell shortly before the end of 1990/91. He'd made five appearances (one as sub) for Margate and scored once.
John stayed at Canterbury until February 1992 when he signed for Kent County League side Snowdown Colliery Welfare.
In January 1993 he left Snowdown and linked up with Kent League Whitstable.
He was last heard of during 1996/97 when he made one appearance for Sheppey during the first half of the season.
