Jim joined Thanet United for the 1984/85 season and played regularly for the reserves. He also made five first team appearances, making his debut in a Southern League Cup tie at home to Dover on 16.10.84 that United won 1-0. Jim impressed during his outings for the senior side and his display in a 1-1 draw at Addlestone & Weybridge on 15.12.84 prompted the Thanet Times to say that he was an "admirable deputy" for the injured Carl Scriven. Jim's aerial strength had particularly impressed the paper and he was referred to as being "an exceptional prospect in the making". He was later said to have "created an excellent impression" during a 5-3 home win over Addlestone & Weybridge on 9.2.85. That match turned out to be Jim's last senior appearance of the season and he then returned to the reserves. He was sent off playing for them in a game at Hastings on 16.3.85.

Jim started the 1985/86 campaign in United's first team and played in the first five matches of the season. The Isle of Thanet Gazette described him as being "redoubtable" and said that Jim was "outstanding" in a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Welling on 3.9.85. A few days later, on 7.9.85, Thanet entertained Bromley in an FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round tie and the 2-2 draw turned out to be Jim's final game for the club. He left the Thanet area shortly afterwards.

Jim was back in Thanet by 1987 and during the 1987/88 campaign he played for local amateur club Margate Athletic.

During the 1990/91 season he returned to Hartsdown Park and made nine appearances for Margate's reserves.
