Talented left-sided player born in Canning Town, London who was noted for his accurate crossing.

Jackie started his career with amateur club Leytonstone and in 1937 he became England's youngest-ever Amateur international when he played in a game against Ireland aged 18.

Later In 1937 Jackie joined West Ham where he soon earnt a reputation for being a colourful character with a fondness for practical jokes. He also gained the nickname of 'Timber'. Jackie went on to make 62 'official' first team appearances for the Hammers and scored 15 goals during a 12 year spell at the club that was badly disrupted by World War II. During the conflict he served in the Essex Regiment Territorials and made 96 wartime appearances for West Ham, scoring 40 goals.

In October 1949 Jackie moved on to Leyton Orient and after making ten senior appearances during 1949/50 he joined Margate in the summer of 1950, linking up with his old West Ham team-mate Almer Hall who was Margate's new player-manager.

Jackie made his debut on 2.9.50 as Margate went down 2-1 at home to Ashford in an FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie. He went on be virtually ever-present during the 1950/51 season, making 38 appearances and scoring eight times.

In August 1951 Jackie was released by the club but within weeks he returned and 1951/52 turned out to be an excellent season for him. He made 35 appearances and scored 13 times, including a hat-trick in a win over Deal.

He made seven further appearances at the start of the 1952/53 season but then left the club.

Jackie's full name was Edward John Wood and he died in the Exeter area in October 1993 around the time of his 74th birthday.
