5' 9" tall forward born in Stubswood who started his career with Northumberland club Amble before joining West Ham in November 1937. During the Second World War George served with the Essex Regiment.

He stayed with West Ham until 1949, making 18 first team appearances and scoring five goals.

George then moved onto Workington before joining Margate in August 1950. He made his debut in an FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie against Ashford at Hartsdown on 2.9.50 and George marked the occasion with Margate's goal in a 2-1 defeat. He went on to score 16 times in 37 appearances during the remainder of the 1950/51 campaign but left the club at the end of the season and joined Betteshanger.

George retired in the early 1950's and returned home to the North East where he worked as a miner.

He died in his native Northumberland on 31.12.05 aged 86 and was buried at Chevington. At the time relatives said that he had been "a big character" and George had apparently kept very fit until the last couple of years of his life.
