Talented 5' 10" tall striker born in Northfleet who began his career with Kent amateur club Beauwater before joining Charlton where he played in the youth and reserve teams.
Garry moved on to Kent League Sheppey for the 1977/78 campaign and enjoyed a superb season, scoring 37 goals for the Kent League outfit.
In the summer of 1979 Garry joined Gravesend & Northfleet but a niggling knee problem meant that he didn't appear in the first team during the 1979/80 season.
In March 1980 Garry joined Margate on loan and he made his debut in a 4-1 defeat at Dover on 8.3.80. Garry struggled for goals initially but after scoring twice in a 4-1 win over Hastings on 7.4.80 he embarked on an impressive run. He scored five goals in his next five games, including two in the first four minutes of a home game against Basingstoke on 3.5.80. That match was the last of the season and Garry then returned to Gravesend. In total he'd scored seven goals in 11 appearances for Margate.
During the summer of 1980 Margate attempted to sign Garry on a permanent basis but he chose to stay at Gravesend and made his senior debut for them on 16.8.80. It was the opening day of the 1980/81 season and Garry scored twice in a 3-1 win over Frickley in an Alliance Premier League game played at Stonebridge Road. He went on to make 25 appearances (nine as sub) and scored seven goals during the campaign.
An article about Garry in a Gravesend programme revealed that his hobbies were darts and squash, his favourite team was Chelsea and his most difficult opponent had been Ray Wilkins.
In August 1981 Garry moved on to Tonbridge and became the club's top scorer for the 1981/82 season, despite fracturing his ankle early on. His tally of 16 goals included one on his debut and both goals in a 2-1 win over Thanet in February 1982.
Garry stayed with the Angels for the start of the 1982/83 season and scored 11 times in 18 appearances for them before going back to Gravesend towards the end of 1982. Garry stayed with the Fleet until linking up with Corinthian early in the 1985/86 season.
In December 1985 he was on the move once more, rejoining Tonbridge, and soon after that Garry returned to Gravesend again. Before the end of the campaign he had further spells with Tonbridge, Corinthian and finally Gravesend once more, meaning that he had made five moves between three clubs in a single season.
Garry rejoined Tonbridge early in the 1986/87 campaign and scored over 20 goals for them during the season. He then scored nine goals during 1987/88 but at the end of the campaign he was overlooked for the Angels' vacant player-manager position and decided to leave the club.
In the summer of 1988 Garry returned to Hartsdown Park and joined Thanet United, over eight years after his loan spell with Margate. He also became player-manager Norman Fusco's assistant. Garry was working as a window fitter at the time.
Garry made his debut for United in the annual Isle of Thanet Gazette Cup match against Ramsgate at Southwood on 2.8.88 and scored with a fine volley in a 1-1 draw but a pre-arranged holiday forced him to miss United's next five matches. He returned to the side in September and his performances prompted the Gazette to say "he has made a big difference to the strike force...his pace and penetration have considerably increased United's goal potential." Garry actually found goals hard to come by during the early part of the season and only scored once more before Christmas, an excellent solo effort in a 3-1 win at Canterbury on 19.10.88 when he finished off a solo run by rounding keeper Kevin Hudson.
In November 1988 Garry became Thanet's new player-manager aged just 31. He was given the job until the end of the season after Norman Fusco resigned and faced a struggle to keep United in the Southern League on a shoestring budget. His new role seemed to inspire him on the pitch and the Gazette said that Garry "worked like a Trojan" in a 3-0 defeat at home to Hastings on 6.12.88. He also had a great game in a 2-0 win over Tonbridge at Hartsdown on 17.12.88, catching the Thanet Times' eye by being "ever prepared to embark on a dogged run through the middle." On 7.1.89 Garry scored his first goals since October when he got two in a 3-0 win over Ruislip at Hartsdown, his first was a shot on the turn and the second was described as a "magnificent effort" by the Thanet Times - a shot from well outside the box. Any chance Garry had of taking his tally to three disappeared on 65 minutes when he took over in goal after Joe Radford was sent off.
As Thanet continued to struggle the Gazette praised Garry's "amazing resilience" in February 1989 and said "his cockney sparrow chirpiness is matched only by a refreshing frankness rare amongst soccer chiefs." Later that month the Thanet Times said that Garry was "a real livewire" as United lost 2-1 at Poole and on 11.3.89 he finally got some reward for his hard work as Thanet beat league leaders Chelmsford 3-2 at Hartsdown. Garry got all three United goals, "each one a gem of opportunism" according to the Gazette. The Thanet Times said he "pounced like a ferret on a rabbit" to intercept the short back pass that led to his second and showed "a dazzling turn of foot" as he ran through for his third, holding off two defenders before slotting home. The paper said that it was "a great goal". Garry said of his match-winning display "although the spotlight fell on myself for the three goals that I scored, the credit for the victory must go to the whole team."
He scored twice more before the end of the season and continued to impress the local papers, the Thanet Times felt that "no-one strove harder" during a 1-1 draw at Folkestone on 25.3.89 and said that Garry was "a constant threat up front". With United safe from the threat of relegation Garry made his final appearance of the season in Thanet's last-ever match before the club reverted to the name of Margate - a 3-0 defeat at Bury on 6.5.89. It took his overall tally for the campaign to 42 appearances (two as sub) and Garry scored ten goals, making him United's joint top scorer along with youngster Mark Munday. Garry won the players 'Player of the Year' award for his efforts.
Although Garry had managed to keep Thanet out of the Kent League against the odds the club decided to advertise nationally for a manager or player-manager in the summer of 1989. Club chairman Gordon Wallis told the Isle of Thanet Gazette that Garry was welcome to apply, saying "he has done an outstanding job under difficult circumstances and played a key role in saving the club from relegation." but Garry didn't get the job and left the club.
He joined Folkestone for the start of 1989/90 but moved on to Chelmsford almost immediately after a disagreement over training arrangements. Early in 1990 Garry joined Gravesend yet again and he then moved to Dartford early in the 1990/91 campaign. In February 1991 he joined Sittingbourne.
Garry later had a short spell at Bury Town, scoring a hat-trick for them in a 6-3 win at Witney in September 1991, before being appointed as Gravesend's manager in November 1991. He was sacked at the end of August 1995 and by then Garry had had six separate spells with the Fleet, making 118 appearances (23 as sub) and scoring 27 goals.
In March 1996 Garry had a brief spell as a player with Whitstable, making three appearances (two as sub) for them. They were the last games of his career in senior football.
During the 2003/04 season Garry played for Earl Grey in the Gravesend League, an amateur competition played on Saturdays. He was 46 years old by then but still scored regularly for them.
In July 2005 Garry played for a Tonbridge Over-35's team in the 'Tonbridge Fiesta' and top scored with five goals during the tournament.
During the 2009/10 campaign he was still turning out for Earl Grey aged 52 and in April 2010 Garry visited Tonbridge's Longmead Stadium to see the Angels play Margate in the Isthmian League.
Remarkably Garry moved up to the Kent County League for the start of the 2010/11 season when he signed for Premier Division club Fleet Leisure but he only made one appearance during the campaign and managed to get himself sent off. Garry retired at the end of the season aged 54.
