6' 0" tall, burly defender born in Acton Green, Middlesex who began his career with Queens Park Rangers. Fred was on QPR's books from 1944/45 to 1946/47 before moving on to Dartford.
In 1947 the Darts sold him to Charlton. Fred joined the Addicks at the same time as his team-mate Riley Cullum and the pair cost the London club £6,000.
In April 1949 Fred left Charlton having never played for the first team and he returned to Kent to join Margate.
He made his debut in a 3-1 win over Betteshanger at Hartsdown Park on 2.4.49 and played seven times before the end of the 1948/49 season. Fred impressed with his use of the ball and was described as being "unbeatable in the air" by the local press.
During the close season Fred was in dispute with Margate over a new contract but he returned to the side a month into the 1949/50 campaign. His uncompromising approach prompted the Isle of Thanet Gazette to describe him as "a complete stopper". Fred was a fixture in the Margate side up until March 1950, making 25 appearances and scoring once, but then left the club to join Snowdown Colliery Welfare having lost his place to newcomer Brian Moffatt.
Fred was a talented cricketer and played for MCC Colts as a youth whilst on the ground staff at Lords. He went on to play in two First Class matches for Middlesex during 1951.
Fred died in Harrow, Middlesex on 17.5.84 aged 59.
