He scored 45 goals in 106 senior appearances for the Wiltshire club before joining Northampton in February 1967.
Soon after Dennis signed for the Cobblers he was involved in a car crash and had to have a kneecap removed. He was out for 11 months but scored in his comeback match, a 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe on 2.3.68. Dennis scored 11 goals in 48 first team games before moving on in July 1969.
He signed for Aldershot and went on to become a very popular player there. Dennis made over 250 senior appearances and scored 60 goals including a hat-trick in Aldershot's 7-2 win at Margate in an FA Cup tie on 15.11.69.
In the summer of 1975 Dennis joined Margate and in August 1975 the Thanet Times described him as being "the one man capable of replacing Eddie Clayton". He made his debut on 16.8.75 in a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Telford. Dennis played in midfield but later appeared on both wings, only occasionally featuring in his preferred role as a striker. On 6.9.75 he put in what the local press described as a "five star performance" in a 2-1 defeat at Wimbledon and on 27.9.75 Dennis scored direct from a corner during a 2-2 draw with Maidstone. He also found the net with a diving header in a 3-1 win at Stourbridge on 24.1.76 and Dennis made a total of 37 appearances (two as sub) during the 1975/76 season, scoring six goals. However he was released at the end of the campaign.

He scored 12 goals in 49 appearances there and then moved to Wokingham in July 1979, scoring five goals in 44 games during the 1979/80 season.
After retiring Dennis kept fit by running every day and an Aldershot website (http://aldershotfc.has.it) said that he became a self-employed salesman, working in the Hampshire and Berkshire areas. In the early 2000's he was living in Wokingham, Berkshire.
