Tough-tackling 6' 0" tall Glasgow-born player who started his career at Cardiff aged 15 and made 21 first team appearances during 1965/66 and 1966/67 before moving on to Crystal Palace. Davie featured in 19 reserve team games for the Eagles during the 1966/67 and 1967/68 seasons and scored twice.

In January 1968 Davie joined Margate at the same time as his Palace team-mate Dai Yorath and chose the club in preference to Romford. At that time he worked for the Post Office in telecommunications.

Davie made his debut in a 3-1 win over Cheltenham in the Southern League at Hartsdown Park on 20.1.68 and turned in an excellent midfield display, impressing with his solid tackling and positional sense. Quietly efficient, Davie went on to make a total of 40 appearances before the end of the 1967/68 season and scored four goals which included what the local press described as a "thunderbolt" during a 3-1 defeat at Weymouth on 10.2.68. He also found the net with a long-range effort in a 6-3 win at Gravesend & Northfleet on 14.2.68 and scored from a direct free-kick in a 3-2 win at Kettering in the Southern League Cup semi-final on 13.3.68. However generally Davie's role was a defensively-minded one and he was referred to as "an able destroyer" and "pillar of resolute determination" by the local paper.

On 6.4.68 Davie featured in the 1st Leg of the Southern League Cup Final - a 1-1 draw with Ramsgate at Hartsdown Park - and then took part in the 2nd Leg at Southwood on 13.4.68 which finished 0-0. On 16.5.68 he was in the Margate team that secured the trophy by beating Ramsgate 3-1 in the replay at Hartsdown Park.

During the 1968/69 season Davie made a further 61 appearances (one as sub) and spent much of the campaign playing as a striker where his bustling style and burly stature proved useful assets. He scored 13 goals, including two on his first appearance at centre-forward in a 4-4 draw at Nuneaton on 26.10.68. On 11.11.68 Davie remarkably scored five times as Margate drew 6-6 with a strong West Ham side in a benefit match for manager Almer Hall and Davie's performance led to West Ham watching him later in the season.

On 16.11.68 he got Margate's consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat at Northampton in the 1st Round of the FA Cup and on 27.1.69 Davie cracked in a 25-yarder in a 2-0 home win over Dartford in the Kent Senior Cup. On 20.5.69 he played as Margate drew 1-1 at Maidstone in the 1st Leg of the Kent Floodlight Cup Final and Davie then rounded off an excellent season by scoring in the 2nd Leg at Hartsdown Park on 24.5.69 that Margate won 3-1 to claim the trophy.

He displayed his versatility once more during the 1969/70 campaign, usually playing as a centre-back but also featuring in midfield on occasions. In addition Davie had a few further outings as a striker. He made 70 appearances and scored four goals, including one in a 7-2 FA Cup 1st Round defeat against Aldershot at Hartsdown Park on 15.11.69. Davie's long throw-in became a feature of his play during the season and he was described as being "a hive of industry" by the local paper.

During the 1970/71 season Davie made 66 appearances (two as sub) to go past 200 for the club. He was used as something of a utility player during the campaign, playing in midfield, as a left winger and as a striker before later settling into central defence. He was a model of consistency and, according to the Isle of Thanet Gazette, "a pillar of strength". Davie scored four goals during the season, the best of them a left-footed drive from the edge of the penalty area in a 3-0 win at Weymouth on 14.11.70 and on 21.11.70 he played as Margate lost 2-0 at Dagenham in the FA Cup 1st Round.

During the 1971/72 campaign Davie again played regularly as a centre-back although he made the odd appearance in midfield too. He endured something of a rocky patch during October / November 1971 when he suffered a leg injury and was briefly dropped to the reserves but he soon reclaimed his first team place and made a total of 54 appearances during the season. He scored two goals, both of them long range efforts. The first of them was a 25-yarder in a 1-1 draw at Nuneaton on 8.1.72. Davie was described as being "unshakeable in the tackle" by the local press during the season.

The 1972/73 campaign was one of Davie's best and he turned in many outstanding performances in Margate's defence. Davie made 61 appearances, taking his overall tally past the 350 mark and the local press said that he was "a dogged battler" who was "reliability itself" during the season. On 18.11.72 Davie was in the Margate side that beat Swansea 1-0 in an FA Cup 1st Round tie at Hartsdown Park and he also featured in a 1-0 win at Walton & Hersham in the 2nd Round on 9.12.72. Davie then played in perhaps Margate's biggest ever match - a 6-0 defeat against visitors Tottenham in the 3rd Round on 13.1.73.

He scored twice during the season and the second of his strikes was described as a "truly superb goal" by the Isle of Thanet Gazette. It came in a 3-1 win over Dartford at Hartsdown Park on 9.4.73 and after picking the ball up inside his own half Davie embarked on a solo run which saw him beat three players before firing a tremendous drive into the corner from the edge of the penalty area. It was one of the highlights of a campaign in which Davie won the club's Player of the Year award and manager Les Riggs described him as "a credit to the club at all times."

1973/74 was designated as Davie's benefit season and events to raise funds for him included a 'Disco Party'. He started the campaign as a regular in the side at centre-back and Davie was praised by the local papers for his "quiet authority". However as the season progressed he fell out of favour and Davie was principally used as a substitute after Christmas 1973. He'd made a total of 43 appearances (seven as sub) without scoring when he was released at the end of the season.

In the summer of 1974 Davie joined Dover but only stayed there for about a month before departing. This was due to him being promoted from his job at Margate County Court to a higher post based in Neath. As a result Davie returned to Wales along with his wife who was from Cardiff. However he wasn't forgotten at Margate and during the 1974/75 campaign the club made a collection on his behalf during the first leg of the Southern League Cup Final against Kettering at Hartsdown.

Initially Davie didn't play football in Wales, but some six months after his move there he joined Pontardawe Athletic who were in the 2nd Division of the Welsh League. Their player-manager was none other than Ivor Allchurch. When Allchurch retired three years later Davie took over as player-manager but didn't enjoy the role and after a season in the job he moved on to B.P. Llandarcy. The club was effectively a B.P. works team and they too were in the Welsh 2nd Division.

Davie played for Llandarcy for several seasons and at the beginning of 1985 he became the club's player-manager. He gave up the role at the end of the 1984/85 season but stayed with the club and began the 1985/86 campaign as a player only. However Davie picked up an injury very early in the season and after being out for about a month he realised he didn't miss playing as much as he'd thought he would. As a result he decided to retire at the age of 37.

In November 1997 Davie returned to Hartsdown Park as a guest when Margate played Fulham in the FA Cup.

He later managed an under-16 team called Skewen Athletic and in 2003 Davie was still living in Neath whilst working for the DVLA in Swansea.

At that time Davie said that his Margate days were the happiest of his career and described himself as "still a player at heart, with lots of happy memories from playing the best game ever created, with (and against) some of the best people you could ever meet."

In 2011 Davie made a trip to Sussex to visit his ailing former Margate team-mate Kevin Barry shortly before he sadly died.

Davie completed a questionnaire for this site which you can see here.
