Middlesbrough-born rangy centre-forward who began his career with Whitby. David joined the club in 1963 aged 18 and scored 25 goals in 31 appearances during the 1963/64 campaign. His tally included a hat-trick in the Northern League Cup Final against West Auckland at Shildon's Dean Street ground on 30.4.64. David had trials at Derby and Wolves during the season before being signed by 4th Division Lincoln City in June 1964.

He made his debut for the Imps in a 2-2 draw at Barrow on 24.8.64 and went on to make three further first team appearances during the 1964/65 season, the last of them in a 1-0 defeat at Chesterfield on 20.2.65.

In October 1965 David joined Margate having been recommended to the club by his old friend (and Margate full-back) Ken Bracewell. David made his debut on 30.10.65 and scored as Margate drew 2-2 with Worcester in a Southern League game at Hartsdown. However he only played twice more before leaving the club.

He was released in November 1965 as he had to return to his home area in the North of England due to his father being ill.

David later played for Kettering.
