Talented son of former Charlton winger Colin Powell who started his senior career with Margate in the summer of 1989. David was only 17 at the time and joined the club after his father was appointed as Margate's new assistant manager.
David made his debut in an attacking midfield role on 15.8.89 as Margate beat Ramsgate 3-1 at Hartsdown Park in the annual Isle of Thanet Gazette Cup game. During the opening month of the season he made a handful of appearances and on 12.9.89 David turned in an impressive display on the left wing as Margate beat Corinthian 1-0 at Hartsdown in a Southern League Cup tie. The Isle of Thanet Gazette said that he "delivered some teasing crosses straight out of his father's repertoire". By the end of September David was a fixture in the number 11 shirt despite his tender years and he kept his place in the side for the rest of the season.
He scored his first goal for Margate in a 3-1 win at Hastings on 28.10.89, racing 30 yards before slotting home. The strike "clearly thrilled his father" according to the Thanet Extra and the Thanet Times said that David had been a "constant menace". The same paper later described him as being "a livewire", "wily" and "ever-lively".
On 20.1.90 David was the star of the show as Margate demolished Sheppey 5-0 at Hartsdown. He scored twice and his first goal was a sensational solo effort that the Extra hailed as being "the goal of the season". David picked up the ball on the halfway line and "embarked on a snaking run and beat five defenders" according to the Extra. He then fired home and the paper said the strike was "worth the admission fee" before adding "Hartsdown can have seen few better goals". The Thanet Times called it "magnificent".
On 17.3.90 David scored another goal that was almost as good in a 3-1 win over Hastings at Hartsdown. He ended what the Thanet Times said was "a mazy run" from just inside the Hastings half with a clinical finish. It was "a magnificent solo goal" in the eyes of the paper and David scored it on the day that his father Colin took charge of Margate for the first time having stepped up to the manager's job following the departure of Trevor Ford.
David rounded off his season by scoring with a clever lob after yet another solo run in a 2-0 home win against Corinthian on 1.5.90. He finished the campaign with a record of five goals from 48 appearances (one as sub).
David found himself on the subs bench for the first two games of the 1990/91 season but impressed when he came on during a 3-1 home defeat against Ashford on 21.8.90. The Gazette said he "played like a man possessed". On 27.8.90 David scored with a superb free-kick in a 1-1 draw at Hythe but he struggled to gain a regular place in Margate's starting line-up and often featured as a substitute. In October 1990 his father stepped down as manager and in November David was loaned to Dulwich Hamlet for a month. When he returned to Hartsdown towards the end of December he still found it hard to re-establish himself in the first team and on 2.2.91 David made his last appearance when he came on as sub during a 2-2 draw at Burnham. In March 1991 he left Margate to join Ashford having scored once in 22 appearances (12 as sub).
After a short spell with Ashford David joined Hastings Town for the 1991/92 campaign and later that season he linked up with Tooting & Mitcham.
He moved on to Sheppey for the 1992/93 campaign and David scored 57 goals for them up to the end of 1994/95.
In June 1995 he signed for Gravesend & Northfleet and went on to enjoy a great spell with the club. During 1995/96 David was the top goalscorer in the entire FA Cup competition, finding the net ten times including a hat-trick in a Qualifying Round tie against Marlow. The Fleet's FA Cup run ended with a famous 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa in the 3rd Round on 2.12.95 and David was part of their side that day along with several future Margate players. In total he scored 19 goals during 1995/96. David carried on his good form for several more seasons and in May 1998 he had a trial at Brighton. He made a total of 225 appearances for the Fleet and scored 60 goals before signing for Crawley in the summer of 2000.
After a year in Sussex David returned to Kent when he joined Welling for the 2001/02 campaign. Early in the season he scored a hat-trick as the Wings beat Folkestone 5-1 in the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. In March 2003 he was loaned to Dartford but David returned to Park View Road for 2003/04. In January 2004 he went on loan again, this time to Ashford where he scored on his debut.
In February 2004 David left Welling and signed for Tonbridge. He stayed with the Angels for around six months before leaving the club early in the 2004/05 season.
David had a brief spell at Banstead later in 2004/05 before retiring.
