5' 8" tall Northern Irish player born in Ballymena who began his career with Crusaders in his native Northern Ireland.
David then moved to England in the summer of 1957 and signed for Kent League side Sittingbourne. He spent just over a year with the Brickies before joining Aldershot in October 1958.
Having made three Football League appearances during the 1958/59 season David left Aldershot in the summer of 1959 and signed for Margate. The club had previously tried to sign him during his time with Sittingbourne but David chose to try his luck with Aldershot instead.
During the 1959/60 season David was principally a reserve team player but he also featured in the first team on eight occasions, scoring four times. His goals included two on his debut - a 3-2 home win over Cambridge United on 22.8.59, the opening day of the season. The first of his brace was significant as it was Margate's first goal in the Southern League since the end of the 1936/37 campaign. David left the club at the end of the season and had a short spell in Thanet local football before moving on to Ashford in October 1960.
He made 23 Southern League appearances for Ashford during the remainder of 1960/61 and scored four goals.
David then joined Ramsgate for the 1961/62 season but returned to Margate in the summer of 1962 having been released. The 1962/63 campaign wasn't a good one for David, he spent most of his time in the reserves, making 34 appearances for them, and only played seven times for the first team, scoring twice. In October 1962 he was quite depressed about the direction his football career had taken and was said to be thinking about giving the game up altogether. He decided against that course of action but at the end of the season David was released and he moved to Deal for the 1963/64 campaign. However he left them at the end of the season.
David joined Whitstable for the 1965/66 campaign and spent three seasons there, scoring 15 goals in 55 appearances up to and including his last game at Brett Sports on 3.2.68.
After retiring as a player he had a spell as coach at Herne Bay and as manager of Faversham.
David then had various non-playing roles at Whitstable, including club secretary, and he was still involved with them during the 2001/02 season when he was reserve team manager.
In 2010 he was living in Whitstable but David was no longer involved with the club at that time, although he was still a regular spectator at Belmont Road.
Shortly before his 77th birthday in 2012 David moved to Derbyshire to be closer to his family for health reasons.
He died in Burton-on-Trent on 14.12.14 aged 79.
