Exciting Ramsgate-born son of 1950's and 60's Margate player Joe Haywood who first came to prominence playing local youth football for Birchington Athletic during the 1974/75 season.
In 1975 Clive signed schoolboy forms for Coventry City and he also made a few appearances for Deal in the Kent League during the 1976/77 campaign aged only 16.
In 1977 Clive became an apprentice with Coventry and during 1977/78 he was a regular in City's youth team. He also made five appearances in the reserves without scoring. The 1978/79 season was a good one for Clive as he scored regularly for City's youth team and on 9.10.78 he got four goals during a 5-1 win at Northampton in an FA Youth Cup tie. Clive also made 15 appearances (two as sub) for the reserves, scoring an impressive nine goals, the first of them in a 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United on 11.11.78. Clive's tally made him the reserve team's top scorer for the season, ahead of the likes of Gary Bannister, Garry Thompson and Mark Hateley. During the 1979/80 campaign Clive scored nine goals in 24 reserve team appearances (four as sub), a tally only bettered by Hateley, Bannister and Steve Whitton. At the end of the season Clive joined Seiko of Hong Kong on a three month loan along with Whitton who later enjoyed a lengthy Football League career.
After returning to Coventry Clive made his 1st Division debut when he wore the number seven shirt in a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa on 30.8.80. The game was watched by a crowd of 20,050 and he played the full 90 minutes. Villa went on to win the title that season and it turned out to be Clive's only first team appearance, although he was later an unused substitute on two occasions.
In May 1981 Clive was sold to American club Washington Diplomats where he played alongside the legendary Johan Cruyff. Clive was also Cruyff's table tennis partner. After scoring thee goals in 12 games during his one season with Washington Clive returned to Hong Kong and joined Bulova where his team-mates included Tommy Hutchinson (of Coventry, Manchester City and Scotland fame) and Charlie George (Arsenal, Derby and England). During the 1982/83 campaign he was the league's top scorer with 26 goals, outscoring the likes of Derek Parlane (Rangers, Manchester City, Leeds and Scotland).
In October 1984 Clive returned to England and joined Thanet United, initially playing for the reserves. Clive made his first team debut when he came on as a substitute in a 2-1 win over Hastings at Hartsdown on 27.11.84. Although he was only the pitch for a few minutes the Isle of Thanet Gazette said that Clive "showed good control and some nice touches". On 1.12.84 he made his full debut in a 3-2 win at Dorchester and marked the occasion with a brilliant goal. Clive cut in from the wing, beat a defender and then fired an unstoppable shot past the Dorchester keeper from outside the penalty area. A few days later, on 4.12.84, he played a trial game for Burnley Reserves at Port Vale and Clive also had a trial with Gillingham around that time. He made a total of 33 appearances (five as sub) for United before the end of the 1984/85 season and scored six goals. Clive usually played as a winger but also featured as a striker and in midfield. His accurate crosses led to many headed goals for the likes of Vic Medus, Gary Pugh and Karl Lloyd.
Clive stayed with Thanet for the 1985/86 campaign and came on as a substitute in United's opening game of the season - a 3-1 win over Chichester City in an FA Cup tie at Hartsdown Park on 24.8.85. He then found himself in the reserves for a lengthy period and he was sent off in their match against Hythe on 19.10.85. On 22.10.85 Clive returned to the first team when he wore the number 11 shirt as Thanet beat Canterbury 2-1 in a Southern League Cup tie at Hartsdown but it was his last senior appearance of the season. After another spell in the reserves he left the club early in 1986.
Clive briefly returned to Hartsdown Park during the 1986/87 season, he was an unused substitute for a game at Erith & Belvedere on 6.9.86 and then made his final appearance for Thanet in a Kent Senior Cup tie at Ashford on 11.11.86. He played as a striker and was booked during United's 3-0 defeat.
Shortly afterwards Clive had to leave the Thanet area due to work commitments and as his job made it impossible to get Saturdays off he gave up senior football at the early age of 27. After that Clive only played Sunday League games, turning out for clubs in various parts of the country, depending on where his work took him.
During a brief spell back in Thanet in the summer of 1993 Clive came on as a substitute as Margate lost 5-0 to Leyton Orient in a friendly but it was his only appearance before his travels took him away from the area again.
In 2004 Clive was living in Ramsgate and working locally as a Quality Engineer.
He was once married to the sister of Thanet United's Simon Briggs and Clive's son Ben played for Margate's reserves during the 2011/12 season.
