Scottish centre-forward born in Glasgow who played for a junior club in the Shettleston district of the city as a youngster before being called up for National Service in 1948.
During his time in the army Bill was stationed at Aldershot, Portsmouth and Bromley and he played for his battalion team. He also spent some time with Reading prior to being demobbed and their manager Ted Drake wanted to sign Bill on a permanent basis. He turned down the opportunity as he wanted to go back to Glasgow and Bill returned home in 1950.
He played for amateur sides Maryhill and Ardeer Thistle and then had spells with several professional clubs including Dumbarton, Dundee and Stirling Albion although he never made a senior appearance for any of them.
In 1953 Bill returned to England and spent a season with Tonbridge before moving on to Ashford. His stay there was brief and Bill then went back to Scotland.
In July 1956 he joined Margate after manager Almer Hall, remembering Bill from his time in Kent, had written to him in Scotland and at that time he was working as a builder. Bill made his debut in a 2-0 win at Tunbridge Wells on 28.8.56 and scored one of the goals as Margate progressed to the next round of the Kent League Cup. He was in and out of the first team during the remainder of the 1956/57 season but on 17.11.56 Bill was part of the Margate side that beat Dunstable 3-1 at Hartsdown Park in the FA Cup 1st Round. In all he scored nine times in 19 appearances during the campaign, including a spectacular diving header in a 2-0 win over visitors Dover on 27.4.57. Bill also scored over 20 goals for the reserves during the season.
During the 1957/58 campaign he made only four first team appearances and failed to score. However he was a regular in the reserves once more and top scored with 24 goals for them.
In the summer of 1958 he moved across Thanet to join Ramsgate and scored regularly for the Rams during the 1958/59 campaign, including a goal in a 5-1 home defeat against Margate on 11.10.58.
In September 1959 Bill returned to Hartsdown once more and spent most of the 1959/60 season in the reserves. However he also made 12 first team appearances but only managed one goal - the winner in a 1-0 triumph at Cambridge United on 19.12.59.
He then spent the entire 1960/61 season in the reserves and was their leading goalscorer with 19 in 32 appearances before being released at the end of the campaign, by then Bill was working for a television installation firm in Thanet.
He joined Canterbury for the 1961/62 season, featuring mainly in City's reserve team.
Bill moved on to Snowdown for the 1962/63 campaign and was still with them during the 1964/65 season although for convenience he trained with Margate at that time.
He sadly died in the early 1990's after a lengthy illness.
