Having never made the Gunners senior side Bert moved on to Brentford for the 1936/37 campaign but dropped out of league football to join Brierley Hill Alliance before the end of the season having never played for the Bees' first team.
Bert returned to league football in August 1937 when Walsall signed him. He went on to score twice in 11 senior appearances for them during 1937/38 but left the club at the end of the season.
His next move took him to Stourbridge and after a further spell with Brierley Hill Alliance Bert joined Lincoln City for the 1941/42 season in the midst of World War II.
He made his debut for the Imps in a War League game at Chesterfield on 30.8.41 and went on to score 28 times in just 31 appearances over the course of the next two years. He left the club in November 1943.
