Burly, battling, opportunist goalscorer with a good turn of pace whose hair and moustache made him instantly recognisable.
Barry was born in Deal and started his career there during 1967/68. Deal won the Greater London League Cup for the season.
In the summer of 1969 he moved on to Herne Bay and scored regularly there before signing for Margate in November 1970, initially on trial, after impressing player-manager Gerry Baker during Margate's 1-0 FA Cup win at Herne Bay on 7.11.70. Baker described Barry as being "A player with plenty of dash."
He made his debut as Margate went down 4-0 at home to Folkestone in a Kent Floodlight Cup tie on 16.11.70 and was then in and out of the first team for the remainder of the 1970/71 campaign. Barry made a total of 20 appearances (one as sub) and scored four goals, the first of which came in a 5-4 win over Dartford at Hartsdown on 10.3.71. In April 1971 the Isle of Thanet Gazette said that he was "a much improved player". During the season the local press regularly commented on Barry's appearance and often referred to him as being "shaggy-maned". On 23.1.71 the report for Margate's 3-3 draw at Wimbledon expanded on this theme and reported that Barry's "Tiny Tim hairstyle was a dash of sheer vaudeville to the appreciative Wimbledon terraces".
Barry really established himself during the 1971/72 season and made 60 appearances. He was Margate's leading goalscorer with a total of 20 goals and he was a tireless worker for the side. Barry took to wearing distinctive white boots during the season and a haircut prompted the local press to comment that his "shorter hairstyle gives him a much more streamlined appearance". However he was still often referred to as "Mexican-moustached". Barry was also described as being "volatile" by the local paper and on 20.11.71 he featured in Margate's infamous 11-0 defeat at Bournemouth & Boscombe in the FA Cup 1st Round. He was watched by Football League scouts during the campaign and Barry's performances won him the club's 'Player of the Year' award.
He started the 1972/73 season in excellent form and his hat-trick in a 5-0 win at Dover on 16.8.72 was not only his first for the club but also the first that anybody had scored for Margate since March 1970. Barry was watched by Gillingham in September 1972 and scored regularly during the first half of the campaign. He was variously described as "elusive", "aggressive", "shock-haired" and "livewire" by the local press.
On 18.11.72 Barry was in the Margate side that beat Swansea 1-0 in an FA Cup 1st Round tie at Hartsdown Park and his performance in a 3-1 defeat at Yeovil on 25.11.72 led to the local press describing him as "razor-sharp". Barry scored from the edge of the penalty area with what the paper said was "a good goal from a good player". On 2.12.72 Barry notched a typical opportunist goal in a 3-2 win at Guildford after latching onto a loose ball, "pouncing like a ferret on a rabbit" according to the Thanet Times.
On 9.12.72 he got the vital goal as Margate won 1-0 at Walton & Hersham in the FA Cup 2nd Round to set up the famous January 1973 clash with Tottenham. Barry was interviewed by the Deal local paper just after the draw was made and said "this is the sort of draw every footballer dreams of but rarely gets. It is great, just fantastic." He went on to say "it's always been my ambition to play against a 1st Division side in the Cup. Now the chance is here I feel really nervous. We've got a chance of winning and we'll certainly give 100 per cent effort to try to win. Whatever happens, we'll enjoy it. We are all hoping the game is switched to White Hart Lane - it'll be fabulous playing there in front of such a massive crowd." In the end the match went ahead at Hartsdown Park on 13.1.73 and Spurs won 6-0.
Barry endured something of a barren spell during the early part of 1973 but regained his form towards the end of the season and scored another hat-trick described by the Thanet Times as "three killer opportunist goals" in a 5-0 win over Burton on 20.4.73. Barry again finished the campaign as Margate's top scorer, with 23 goals from 55 appearances (three as sub).
Although Barry struggled to find his best form for much of the 1973/74 season he still scored 19 times in 61 appearances (two as sub) to finish the campaign as the club's joint top scorer along with John Hold. His goals included a chip described by the local press as "surprising" in a 4-0 win over Chatham on 8.12.73 and a fluke effort as Margate won 2-1 at Telford on 23.3.74. A goal kick from the Telford keeper only went as far as Barry, lurking on the edge of the penalty area, and the ball cannoned off him and into the net. Barry also scored with a brilliant header in a 2-0 win at Maidstone in the Kent Senior Cup Final on 13.4.74 but at the end of the season he was transfer-listed.
Barry ended up staying with the club for the 1974/75 campaign and he made a further 57 appearances, four of them as a substitute. Barry, by then bearded, scored 21 goals and he was described as a "lightning striker" by the local press. On 30.11.74 he fired a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Dulwich at Hartsdown Park and on 11.2.75 Barry scored with a crisp volley during a 2-1 win at Ramsgate. During a 2-1 home defeat against Chelmsford on 22.4.75 he was said to be "full of running and fire" and on 2.5.75 Barry scored twice after coming on as a half-time substitute in a 2-2 draw at Weymouth. One of his goals was a superb lofted shot.
During the summer of 1975 he had a spell in Toronto, Canada where he played for London City alongside the likes of Steve Breach, Phil Brooman, Ray Flannigan, John Hold, Graham Sawyer and Paul Smith.
At the start of the 1975/76 season Barry found it difficult to break into the side and he featured mainly as a substitute during the first two months of the campaign. In early October 1975 he was fined a weeks wages and transfer-listed after refusing to play for the reserves but Barry still scored in three consecutive games during the month. His goal in a 1-0 win at Burton on 11.10.75 was an excellent one, Barry beat two players before firing home. However in November 1975 he was sold to Maidstone, five years after joining Margate. Barry had made ten appearances, three of them as a substitute, and scored three times.
He made a good start to his Maidstone career, scoring seven times in his first nine appearances before the end of 1975.
Barry then joined Dartford and spent the early part of the 1976/77 season with them, scoring five times in 21 appearances, including two goals in a 4-3 win over Margate at Hartsdown Park on 16.10.76. Towards the end of the campaign he moved on to Folkestone & Shepway.
He then returned to Deal for the 1977/78 season and scored ten goals before retiring.
In later years Barry played amateur football for Woodensborough and was still turning out for them during the early 2000's.
In 2004 Barry was living in Deal and was part of Dover Harbour Board's works management team. He'd originally been a carpenter for the company during his time with Margate.
Barry was still living in Deal in 2011.
