During the 1970/71 season Allan won three caps for the Scottish non-league side, playing in games against Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Wales. In 1973 he left Scotland and moved to Thanet.

Allan joined Margate for the 1973/74 campaign and became a regular in the reserves. He also made two first team appearances. Allan made his senior debut aged 25 in a 2-1 win over Telford at Hartsdown on 23.3.74 and was referred to as a "bewhiskered striker" by the Thanet Times. He kept his place for Margate's next game at Cambridge City on 26.3.74 and the Isle of Thanet Gazette report said that Allan "could make the grade with more experience".

In April 1974 he went to Canada to play for Toronto-based London City in the Canadian Professional League along with several other former / future Margate players. Allan scored around 40 goals for City before returning to England in November 1974.

He rejoined Margate and played for the reserves throughout the remainder of the 1974/75 campaign. Allan also won a local penalty competition at Hartsdown Park in January 1975.

He then spent the whole of the 1975/76 season in the reserves before being released in the summer of 1976 when the reserves were disbanded for financial reasons.

In March 1977 Allan was re-signed by Margate and scored in his first game back, a 1-1 draw at Chelmsford on 25.4.77. He also found the net in the return match at Hartsdown on 3.5.77 when Jimmy Greaves was on the scoresheet for Chelmsford. Allan went on to make a total of six appearances (one as sub) before the end of the 1976/77 season without scoring again. In the summer of 1977 he left the club once more and dropped into local amateur football.

Allan was still playing locally during the 1980/81 season and also turned out for Thanet United's reserves once or twice during the 1981/82 campaign.

He continued to play local amateur football intermittently for many more years and made his last appearances for Ramsgate pub team Hamiltons in 1999 aged 50. In 2009 Allan recalled "I should have known better !"

He worked for P & O Ferries (originally known as Townsend Thoresen Car Ferries) for 30 years and retired as a Purser Catering Officer in 2006.

In 2009 Allan was living in Cliffsend, not far from St.Augustine's Golf Club, and spent much of his time on the course. Several other former Margate / Thanet United players were also members at the club.
